We arrived for our first stay at Le Grand Courlan to find the dusky pink buildings which we had seen on previous visits to Tobago were now bright orange, and looking much better for the change. Our room was large, cool and spotless for our arrival and was kept in excellent order throughout our stay.

The hotel occupancy was low while we were there which meant we were never short of sunbeds or shade, either at the pool or on the beach near the beach bar.

The meals were a really pleasant surprise having read some previous reports; table service for most meals due to the low guest numbers and a decent choice on the menu. The quality of the food was high throughout and the staff were, with just one exception, friendly and efficient.

A buffet was arranged at the beachbar for all the guests of Le Grand and the neighbouring Grafton one evening, and both the quality and presentation were excellent. The highlights were a leatherback turtle putting in an appearance to lay her eggs right outside the beach bar and a little while later we were treated to the sight of a hatch of baby turtles being guided to the sea by one of the local "turtle wardens". The catering manager claimed all the credit for putting on the free show, and no-one wanted to dispute this! A great evening.

The spa treatments were enjoyable and highly professional, with the staff seemingly happy to re-arrange the pre-booked appointments to help us with the planning of our days out from the hotel.

This was a really enjoyable stay and one which we plan to repeat before too long.
