No matter how good our holidays are, we usually prefer to go somewhere different every year. The exception is Turtle Beach, Tobago. We have just returned from our third stay in six years and enjoyed ourselves as much as ever. Judging from the number of repeaters we met there's plenty of others who think there's no where else quite like it. Other destinations also offer great locations, spacious rooms and excellent, freshly cooked food but Turtle Beach stands out because the people are so friendly. If you treat the hotel staff and local traders with respect then you are welcomed with open arms and get to enjoy the real flavour of this Caribbean paradise. We look forward to going back again soon for more woodcarvings and songs from Reuben, leather work from Henri, relaxing massages on the beach from Mary and fabulous home made jewellery from Jackie.
The nesting leatherback turtles, the protected primary rainforest and the diverse ecology in general make Tobago a very special island. If you care about wildlife, go to the regular Saturday evening presentation at the hotel by resident wildlife expert Peter Cox.
One final tip. There are many local tour operators that offer excellent personalised day trips. Read the testimonials in the hotel lobby and ask other guests for recommendations to make sure you choose the best of them.
