We stayed two weeks at Blue Waters and loved it. The situation of the hotel is superb and, like us, the other clients were usually looking for a restful but active holiday. We wanted bird watching (which you can do right from the hotel, both in the grounds and on tracks nearby), snorkelling (plenty right there in the bay, or take a boat trip from in front of the hotel), bathing in the sheltered bay (the water was warm, calm and the beach in front of the hotel was pure sand kept tidy by hotel staff), and good local food. The food at the hotel was usually good to very good; six months ago they employed a new head chef who is training up the other chefs and developing the menu. Once or twice the main meal disappointed. The lunch-of-the-day dishes were always good and the evening dinner menu provided several interesting choices. Prices were average for Speyside, though you can get good cheaper meals at roadside restaurants (we hired a car for five days). We liked the system of the 24/7 free tea and coffee side table at the bar; several times a day we would sit on the bar terrace and enjoy the view across the bay with our drinks. Breakfasts, served on the bar terrace, were good with plenty of choice (juices, fruits, corn flakes, cake, toast), including several tasty and ample cooked dishes (fish/eggs/bacon/sausage etc). We were pleased that the kitchen was happy to adjust dishes to suit individual needs.

Our room was spacious, clean and very comfortable; if you want to look into the trees on the beach to spot birds and sacrifice the sea view then choose upstairs, if you want the sea view but less privacy from passing guests then downstairs is a better choice. The rooms were always serviced daily to a high standard and the hotel generally kept really clean. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We liked the diversity amongst the clientele; as well as other British, we met a German couple, a Swedish Mum and daughter, an American backpacker and several families from Trinidad or Tobego.

Blue Waters will close for some weeks in September and October (2011) to enable them to revamp the kitchens and the bar; guest rooms that have not yet been upgraded will be done, and a small swimming pool will be installed. But thankfully the hotel is not getting larger. When it opens again in November, this small friendly hotel will have taken a step towards becoming the perfect Caribbean retreat. Hopefully they will also revamp their website as it currently portrays a backward hotel, which it is certainly not.
