Sunday Flights - where to buy grocery essentials

Hi,

We are travelling to Tobago on Sunday 16 December. The flight arrives late afternoon and I just wondered if anyone could advise where to pick up a few grocery essentials between the airport and Castara please? With it being Sunday afternoon I have a feeling most stores will probably be closed. We are self catering for two weeks but there’s only so much dry food such as teabags, you can pack in a case. So it’s basics like bottled water, and perishables like milk and bread. Really looking forward to visiting Tobago again. 3rd time! Many thanks

Welcome aboard! :)

Yes, as mentioned on our Grocery Shopping page (menu: Information > Shopping), the supermarkets close at 1pm on Sundays. By late afternoon, I doubt that even the Bon Accord Food Basket will be open. Chances are you will be snookered, I'm afraid. Just a few hundred yards from the airport, you will see an ugly violent green two-storey square building on your right-hand side, on the junction of the main Milford Road and the Store Bay Local Road/Old Store Bay Road. The advertising hording for Pizza Boys/Church's Chicken is the most noticeable sign. There is bags of parking out front and in the front right-hand corner a small but very useful mini-mart. That will be fine for getting water, long-life milk and plastic bread.

In recent years, we have taken to spending the first night at Shepherd's Inn in Crown Point - right beside the airport. After a long flight, it means we can have dumped our luggage in our room and be relaxing at the bar with a cold drink within 10 minutes of leaving the airport. Then, we can take a more leisurely and considered approach to shopping the following morning. If you are staying in Castara, I wouldn't consider anything else. After all, you will get there in the dark, have to go out for breakfast and then immediately be back on the road to the other end of the island to stock up.

Anyway, have a wonderful holiday.

Thank you. I did consider that option. I’ll have a rethink😊😊

one minute drive from the airport there's a small grocery shop just by the entrance of Crown Point Beach Hotel on Old Store Bay road. They are open till 8pm. Also on your way up to Castara turn left towards Buccoo at the Buccoo junction and about a hundred meters down the road you'll see the Caribben Cornerstone Supermarket on the other side, they are open till late even on Sundays.
Hope this helps

Robert

in the immediate vicinity of the airport, both of those previously mentioned will be open. a little further down the milford road, on the left just after jade monkey, is jimmy's resort and mini-mart which will also be open.

Christabel's (next to crown point hotel, may close early if no business !) is probably the smallest of the 3 but not a bad range or price. Trim's (the green building) has just expanded into the unit next door and certainly a good enough range for a day or two, but the most costly of the 3. will definitely be open, up to and including 23.00. jimmy's is cramped and quite haphazard but lowest price with probably the widest range

Trims and Christabel both have freezers which are not immediately obvious and usually have basic frozen fish and some meats. Jimmy's sells no alcohol (but always seems to have a good stock of sun lotions ! )

Thank you so much for your replies and advice. I’m sure we’ll manage. We are being collected from the airport so hopefully stop at one of the suggested places on the way up to Castara. So looking forward to it. Cuffie River, Little Tobago and the beautiful hummingbirds at Arnos Vale. Can’t wait :)

Caribbean Cornerstone Supermarket in Buccoo would be a good choice then as they are pretty well stocked.

You will not need bottled water in Castara! You can get most things in Castara. Fresh fruit, veg, fish of course, all meat is frozen. Moo milk is pretty good . Bring tea bags or loose. Marmite ! Antihistamine cream from Boots always useful.
