We are not five-star hotel or luxury apartment people. The Toucan is exactly the sort of small, relaxed, easy-going accommodation where we feel most comfortable. The rooms are basic, but are large, airy and clean with en-suite facilities and air-conditioning. They are set in attractive gardens full of birds. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and there was a real sense of safety - our daughter forgot about her bag at the New Year's Eve party, and when we anxiously enquired after it next morning, it was to find that it had been kept safely at reception - a great relief. The guests, like the staff, were friendly and relaxed and all seemed very appreciative of the Toucan, several having stayed there before, some on many occasions. The restaurant has a delightful atmosphere. It feels more outside than in, with its broad balcony almost surrounding it and able to accomodate most of the diners. The food was nothing special on the whole(except for the New Year's Eve party, which was excellent in every way, and much appreciated by our student-age children). However, the same could be said of other places where we ate. Perhaps we shall discover some better eating-places on our next visit.
Crown Point is probably the most convenient place to stay on the island, and the Toucan's proximity to the airport is an advantage rather than a disadvantage, since one is totally unaware of the planes( they take off over the sea and we did not so much as hear an engine) .
In terms of value for money, I can't imagine the Toucan being bettered, and we have already booked to return there next January.
