Spearfishing on the reef!

Post by Chris Runciman »

The other day a visitor shot a good size Parrotfish in Castara! PLEASE do not do this !
Parrotfish clean the reef , therefore more fish to see when snorkelling !
Shoot as many Lionfish as you can, they taste great anf they are a highly invasive fish which is destroying our fish stocks as they have no natural enemies!

Lionfish are such good eating. We take and distribute them regularly but just cant seem to persuade people that they are a food source. Down this end they seem to have learned that they are now on the food chain - we're seeing them further out and deeper now.

Some local species have however cottoned on to them as prey - there is video on youtube, believed to be the first recorded example, from further up the islands of a grouper slowly but surely "de-spining" one and eventually swallowing it whole. There is more footage of other endemic species being "trained" to take them but we really ned them to start appearing on menus for a difference to be made.
