Foreign debit cards - a minor caution

Post by PaulMakin »

just to make folks aware.

a friend of mine used the RBC ATM at D'Colloseum recently, an activity which had been trouble free historically. On this occasion the machine retained the card "owing to a fault with the ABM".

telephoned RBC in S'boro expecting to be able to collect from branch later in the day on production of suitable ID, as per Republic (yes, they done it before).

however, as this is an "off branch" ATM the reconcilliation process takes several days. this would have been OK but it seems that the cartridges are taken to a processing centre at an understandably undisclosed location where the contents are managed. foreign cards are routinely destroyed as the staff have no way of working out where to return the card.

can only comment on the differing processes at Republic and (now) RBC, other ATMs are available and your experience may vary but the lesson she learned is to stick to ATMs attached to a branch if using foreign cards
