Money exchange

Post by Nancy heersink »

Arriving in tobago, transitting thru trinidad airport on 1 ticket. I know that there is no money exchange at tobago Airport, only an ATM. Will I have access to the money exchange at trinidad Airport, without having to go thru security again at trinidad Airport? Or will we have to leave the secure area and go back thru security?
If we have to leave secure area and wait to go back thru security we would consider using atm.

Thanks

Nancy

Don't know much about Trinidad I'm afraid but be aware that the ATM at Crown Point has been defunct for a few years now - there are at least 3 others in the vicinity though.

Hi Julie

I may be wrong, but I don't know of ANY bureaux de change outlets in Tobago. However, I think that all the banks offer exchange facilities and there are several branches within walking distance of the airport and/or between the airport and Scarborough.

the odd bureau pops up every now and again but nothing currently operational.

Banks are much easier to navigate than previously - Republic at Crown Point "plaza" is closest to the airport and they also have a flagship HQ on the HIghway on the way into S'boro. No dedicated exchange facilities, just join the line. ID will be required. There's a ScotiaBank branch in the Mall at Lowlands (can get quite busy)

Some quaint opening times - weekdays they open and close early and not at all on weekends. Check local branches for hours - on Fridays some will open, close and then re-open (Republic at Crown Point for example)

Is the RBC ATM beside La Cantina operating again? It was down when we were there in early 2022.
We used the EASTERN CREDIT UNION, across the road from Skewers in Crownpoint (it has a small parkinglot for that tiny indoor mall with the coffee shop)

that building is practically derelict now. There is an RBC ATM in the car park at D'Colesseum - i had one visitor experience problems there with a retained card and the advice from their helpline was to try and stick to branch ATMs as cards can be retrieved by staff in the event of problems.

Foreign cards are routinely destroyed by the RBC reconciliation facility (probably all banks ?) as they have no way of returning them to the owner.

By destroyed, you mean the machine would not return the card in the middle of a transaction? This has never happened in any jurisdiction in the world with any of my Canadian Bank cards. For the past 15+ years of travelling to Tobago, we typically used the RBC by La Cantina or the Scotia Bank machine in the Gulf City Mall. Never had an issue.

The episode i got caught up involved a retained card - from memory the ATM immediately flashed up an error message and kept the card. The conversation with RBC is when i learned of the reconcilliation process. Foreign cards have nothing that the system can use to identify the cardholder and so are physically destroyed when the ATM cartridge is opened at the facility.

Having said that, an RBC card issued in Canada may be different - card in question in this situation was a UK Mastercard.

Like you, i have never had an issue with my cards. The ATM screen definitely referenced a "fault with the ATM" though (but only after the card was kidnapped).
