Golf - 2004 update - Tobago Plantations / Mt Irvine Bay

Tobago Plantations:
The course and facilities continue to improve with the club now offering a more realistic tariff for golfers wishing to play a few times during their stay. We took advantage of the 2 rounds in 5 days deal which (with buggies – essential) worked out at £45 per round. Other packages are even more attractive (a combination of 9 holes for those wanting a “quickie” before dinner) as are the hire clubs and golf shoes.
Pro Danny Hacker (that really is his name) is enthusiastic and engaging – support his Wednesday “Roll up and barbeque” and the staff in the pro shop (Alfreda et al) were extremely helpful and charming. The new 19th is now complete offering daily lunches and dinner (Friday only) in pleasant surroundings and has on site masseuse in the shape of Oosha who used to work out of the Kariwak Village.
Despite claims on the course planner that there are 27 holes the additional 9 are not slated to be built the back end of 2004.
I have no doubt the course will be highly praised by the players at the forthcoming European Seniors event.
Mt Irvine Bay:
A few pointers that the course is beginning to receive the attention it needs to offer the serious golfer a suitable alternative to the Plantations course. Firstly even allowing for the copious and unseasonable rainfall the course looked as green as anytime over the last five years. Secondly, that there is an abundance of new white sand in the bunkers which adds to the aesthetic quality of the course. Thirdly, there seemed to be more people playing than at any time over the last five years.
So while the greens being of indigenous grasses remain slow by comparison with the recently constructed Plantations course the mown fairways looked particularly attractive.
It is now possible to envisage golfing packages that encompass both courses.
