Yes, they CAN be a little distracting, eh?
In fact, my husband and I are head-over-heels infatuated with French Polynesia and everything about it- we've been going annually for the past five years. We made a conscious decision to go elsewhere this year for our winter trip- just to see if it was still possible for us to enjoy the rest of the world, given our addiction to Tahiti and her islands. (Everyone should have such a monkey on their backs!).
So Tobago was our carefully thought-out alternative to Tahiti. Of course there were things we missed- but Tobago also has its advantages.
We missed the big animals one sees in Tahiti diving (sharks everywhere, many, many rays, dolphins!), but Tobago has significantly lovelier corals.
We missed the prevalent incredibly fresh tuna as served in Tahiti as sashimi or
poisson cru, but we never tired of the spicy fare in Tobago as we have done in the past in Tahiti, with their French-inspired menus.
We missed the constant sound of live polynesian music, but were excited to reconnect with the soca rhythms of the Caribbean!
We missed the blinding white sands and blue lagoons of French Polynesia, but loved the many perfect little bays and and their golden sand beaches on Tobago.
etc.
It's all good!
