We'll be staying in Castara for a week and would like to get around to some of the best beaches and beach-accessible snorkeling spots as well as dining out a few nights. We'd also like to see some of the rainforest but are leaning towards a tour for it. Will we miss out on much by not having a 4WD - when we visited St. John last year we found no need for the highly recommended 4WD (at best there were one or two spots we might have gone to, but with so many to choose from anyway...)? I've seen the recommendations in this forum to hire the car (and perhaps arrange the rainforest tour) through YES Tourism...which I think we'll do unless anybody has advice to the contrary.
