Immigration Requirements for Extended Vacation

My family and I are all UK citizens. We are hoping to take an extended vacation in Tobago between October 2004 and August 2005.
As I understand things, on arrival we will be given permission to stay for up to an initial 3 months. Before expiry of this period we will need to apply for an extension from the immigration department. The assumption is that this will be granted, as long as we can show we have the means to support ourselves and my young children haven't got in trouble with the police.
Does anyone have experience of applying for an extension and can explain the process?
Is it a safe assumption that the extension will be forthcoming if everything else is in order?
