NOTE: The filming of the tub raft scenes in the deep water and around the treacherous rocks were done at Quashie Bay (renamed Shipwreck Bay after filming) in Belle Garden.

After filming was completed the tub raft was left on the beach — a local salvaged one of the fiberglass coated tubs. It’s in his collection of movie memorabilia at his home in Tobago.

REX CINEMA, TOBAGO (CIRCA 1992)

The 1960 movie Swiss Family Robinson was released on 21 December 1960. In 1961, the movie was shown for the first time at the Rex Cinema, Scarborough for one week.

According to the then cinema operator, Clifford Cook (90), every show was sold out. Interestingly, Rex Cinema was used during filming in 1960 by the production team to view the dailies (day’s filming).

The Swiss Family Robinson dailies (day’s filming) were viewed at Rex Cinema during the filming of the movie in Tobago from August 1959 to January 1960.

Peter Ellenshaw and Disney’s
Swiss Family Robinson movie Tobago

Matte artist Peter Ellenshaw painting on glass used on the set for a high quality in camera matte effect during the filming of the pirate ship blown up at Richmond Bay. The scene was filmed from the hill with the family fort but owing to the elevation needed, the hill and the nearby island was painted on glass in front of the camera. The wooden frame housing the glass is visible in this photo.
