What to do on first visit to Tobago.

We will be arriving in Tobago in around 10 days, staying at the Coco Reef Hotel in Crown Point. Our primary reason for the visit is to do some bird watching. To which, we have booked some tours with Newton George. As we have only a few odd days between these trips we have decided that it isn't practical to rent a car, so we are looking for a few things to do away from the hotel.
We felt that we should try to visit Scarborough but are not sure of the best way to get there and back (bus or taxi?) or what we should see while we are there. Some of the reviews in this forum have made us wonder if it is worth the effort of visiting at all?
Any other suggestions of places to visit without a rental car are welcome.

The bus service is pretty reasonable these days - the bus stop is right by Coco Reef, just by the Store Bay car park (right turn out of the gates and there it is).

Having said that, not a great deal to see/do in S'boro. Its a working town with few concessions to tourism. Even the Fort is undergoing renovations with large portions out of bounds currently. I always enjoy the Botanical Gardens but half an hour tops.

Most attractions on the island are of the blink and miss it kind and you have the natural world covered already. Don't entirely dismiss the idea of a car for a day or so - a lot of fun to be had just pottering about the vicinity, exploring the locale, experiencing "Pennysavers" etc

If you definitely don't want a car though check with front desk at the hotel - they will have a programme of tours available I'm sure. Of course there are some fine beaches local to you if relaxation were the aim on your days off.

Thank you for the information Paul. I thought that the most attractive places in Scarborough would be the fort and the botanical gardens. In view of the state of the fort, I'm not sure it's worth the effort of getting there. Perhaps we'll just take a walk to Fort Milford instead. Still not sure about the car hire, we've got some early starts with Newton, so we'll probably be wanting a slow start on the other days. Thanks again for your message, it's much appreciated.

Fort Milford is small but a nice place to sit awhile.

Timing your visit to watch the sun set then dropping into the nearby Crown Point Hotel for a couple of drinks (rude not to, you'll be walking past anyway !!) would be a very pleasant way to end the day

Sounds good, I never turn down the opportunity to enjoy a couple of drinks.

ask the staff to point out the route to the Fort via Store Bay instead of walking all the way round on the road. Basically through the car park, bear left past the vendors and the right at the first crossroads. Fort is on the right a couple of hundred yards further on. You cant go too far, the island more of less ends at the point.

for a drink or two in the Fort area you also have Tropikist located just past the Fort on the right. Bar/restaurant area behind the reception building adjacent the "new" accommodation block

they have terraces with seating and beach access. again, a pleasant way to end the day IMO. You may prefer to avoid hotels but, for an hour or two, these establishments are very well suited to relaxation.

Both the hotels have bar areas overlooking the ocean and both also have pleasant garden areas.

Much pricier than local bars but I guess that's the price of entry. Happy Hour at Crown Point 1700-1900 - depends on who's keeping bar, sometimes you get 2 for 1 but usually it's just a price reduction
