Tobago on a tight budget - Arnos Vale area

Can anyone please recommend any restaurants which are set in scenic locations but that are reasonably priced? Preferably local cuisine. Not too far from Arnos Vale area?
Also, any good value but reliable car hire firms?
Thank you
Jayne

Hello Again Jayne
Sadly you have no choice in the Arnos Vale area. There are NO restaurants in Plymouth, the nearest village. The Arnos Vale Waterwheel is the nearest, but it is far from cheap.
Amadeus is less than a 10-minute drive away and they are capable of some of the best catering on the island, but see our notes in the Restaurants section (Food & Drink menu above).
The nearest other than that are the Black Rock Cafe and Under The Mango Tree in Black Rock. Both reasonably priced, but reports vary. Not exactly a "scenic location" either.
Check out the Restaurant listing, as I suggest, and look for places in Black Rock, Pleasant Prospect, Mt.Irvine and Buccoo, in that order (all 10-15+ mins drive max).
As far as car hire is concerned, check out our
Car Rental article. Your best bet is probably a vehicle from Sheppy, booked through Yes Tourism.

We were there 2 weeks ago and the restaurant was closed. It appeared to be permanently closed, not just for the day. We had a hard time finding a place to eat, and we ended up at Store Bay!

Thanks, Sally - useful information that I will follow up on to get confirmtion before I strike it from our restaurant listings. Under The Mango Tree has always been a "daytime" cafe and normally closed early evening. Did you call during the day or evening?

Hi Sally
My latest information (within the past hour) is that the lady owner returned to Germany and the restaurant is now permanently closed, so please cross Under The Mango off your list of possible restaurants, Jayne.

Hi may I suggest Indigo restaurant-it is on the hilltop overlooking courland bay near the Grafton Hotel. Check out their website.

Very nice little place.
There is a restaurant in Plymouth-at the Cocrico Inn. Local food, I have had awesome club sandwiches here-fairly good prices. There is also a little local restaurant (may be closed now) in Plymouth that used to be owned by the sous chef from the Grafton Hotel. Chicken, fish, etc. but some Fridays had BBQ. As you enter Plymouth, taking the Arnos Vale road right off the junction, the restaurant/bar would be on the second street to your left, just on the rise of the hill. You could walk here and the Cocrico as well.
For local taxi-try Dwayne in Plymouth (868) 639-5104. He is a very trustworthy fellow with his own car and also works with Franke Tours taking tourists on boat excursions.
