Does anybody know if the 9 hole par 3 course at Sugar Mills on Tobago Plantations is open yet? Their web-site says it was due to open, along with the childrens' course in 2002, but I can find nothing to confirm this. Also, do you need a handicap to play at Mt. Irvine and Tobago Plantations? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hello Mary

Welcome aboard!

No, the Sugar Mills 9-hole course and children's course haven't even been STARTED yet.

That's a good question about whether you need a handicap. I have no idea, to be honest. I would suggest you contact the clubs at [email protected] and [email protected] to find out. If you do, please let me know and I will add the information to our article on the two courses.

Thanks for the info Steve - it's a bit disappointing as I doubt I'll be good enough to play on the 18 hole courses. I did email both the clubs on Tobago a couple of weeks ago, but to date have received no replies. However, if I do, I'll let you know. Failing that, we travel in 5 weeks anyway :D , so I'll be able to find out for myself.

Hi Mary

Your reply saddens, but does not surprise me. What is it with these people? Why do they have to be so rude? I've heard this time and time again and had the same lack of response myself when I've tried to get information from them. Its either extreme arrogance or extreme incompetence, and I'm not sure which.

Hello Mary (and Steve)

Just registered - not before time as we're off to Coco Reef for 2 weeks on 15 July, and have really benefitted from this site for months now. Re Mount Irvine, I did exchange e-mails with them 3/4 months back, and there is no need for a handicap (a good thing in my case as I'll also need refresher lessons!).

Cheers

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the info about Mt. Irvine - no handicap requirement is good news for me! We will be staying very near the course for the first 2 weeks of our holiday so I think I'll take my clubs after all and give it a go. Not so sure about Tobago Plantations though, it sounds a little more upmarket so I expect they will require a handicap.

Enjoy your time in Tobago and thanks again.

We played Mt Irvine several times whilst on the island. We got out as early as possible, which meant, if you wanted a cart, you had to wait until the club reception office opened at about 0645.

Staff at the reception were efficient and polite. The carts are in v good condition.

We were never asked for handicap certificates.

The course is challenging and very attractive. The 9th tee giving spectacular views over the ocean to the reef

The fairways needed some attention i.e more regular mowing, greens were decent. The white sand in the bunkers is rock hard, you can putt out of them!

You will lose a few balls but dont worry there are always guys around who will sell you quality Titleists for about 0.50p.

All in all an experience I'd like to repeat.

Golf / HCP Certificates

Quite honestly both courses will appreciate the custom and the Plantations course has numerous tees that will enable the less accomplished player to enjoy a game. It is very unlikely you will be asked for a handicap certificate.

If you want to clarify call Danny Hacker (at Tobago plantations).
