Maps/Guide Books

I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a good map to buy before we go to Tobago and where I can find a copy. My initial thoughts would be to purchase one from Calabash Skyviews and I will do so unless anyone can advise me differently.

Also, I would probably wish to purchase a guidebook as well so if anyone has some advice on this I would be most grateful. With Steve’s permission I might just print out some pages from mytobago.info but I need to get a decent printer before this is possible. How about a printed sightseeing guide taken directly from the pages of mytobago.info, in a handy pocket size, that could be purchased from this site (like the CD version)?

Thanks in advance for any help

Richard

Hi Richard

Sadly there's little choice when it comes to maps.

The Calabash Skyviews maps are a good choice, if a little out of date. They are the largest scale available and given away free all over Tobago - you'll almost certainly be given one free if you use any of the good car rental firms.

My personal favourite is the Insight FlexiMap "available from all good bookstores" over here. Although a little smaller than the Calabash map, it's much higher print quality and, best of all, laminated and foldable.

In terms of guide books, my favourite is the Rough Guide to Trinidad & Tobago (again, available from ....). They also do a useful map of the island. Sadly, in all cases, most of the book/map is dedicated to Trinidad, not Tobago.

By all means print out the pages. Sadly, the CD-ROM will probably be unavailable after I next rebuild the site because the database technology I shall use. However, I may produce one with all the relevant/important pages reproduced specifically for printing out. In fact, you suggestion gives me some ideas that might allow me to do it in folded A4-format to form a small booklet. However, the cost of doing this and making sure that the printed copies stay up to date is substantial. The only way I could possibly justify that is by taking some basic steps to make it extremely difficult for readers to print out the pages of the website and basically try to force them to buy downloadable or CD-ROM-based 'printable' copies. To be honest, this sticks in my throat a little. Sadly most people's attitude is "why should I pay for it when I can get it for free?" and I'm as guilty of this as the next man, but sadly it is an attitude that will severly hamper the services I can provide. A dilemma!
