myTobago – your questions, review and comment about Tobago

I am interested in doing a bit of fishing (on my own) while in Tobago next week...I just read about spearfishing, which appeals to me. Has anyone any information on where/how I might do this in Tobago? Also, if I want to fish ("regular style") where would I go, and what would I fish for? I'd also have to rent poles, etc as I have nothing. Any thoughts are much appreciated!! First time to Tobago!

The first thing you should do is to read our [http://myTobago.info/fishing.htm]Fishing[/url] article. As far as we have been able to determine, there is nowhere on Tobago that rents fishing tackle and this would include spearfishing. There are a couple of shops, mentioned in the article, that sell gear though.

You've probably read the fishing article in the activities section, as Steve has suggested, so will be aware that the options for hiring poles and reels are limited. I guess guess it depends on how serious i.e how much you are prepared to pay for the services of a guide.

Check out some of the recent questions and answers on fishing, by typing the word 'fishing' into the search engine (top of page) on this site. If you are looking to catch something to eat, such as kingfish or tuna, then one of the fishing/beach BBQs arranged by Frankies Tours or King David (Castara), would fit the bill. You may be able to join a small party, in order to reduce costs.

I am also in Tobago next week, i also want to go fishing, and i also can't convince (so far) anyone else i'm going with to go with me!

If you do find anywhere that take people out who aren't in a group could you post it on the forum here. If i can convince some others to go with me your more than welcome to join us!

David- So far, no luck. I'm not really up for dishing out 500$ for a half day...but prices seem to decrease with numbers. My sister may be up for it, but it's more "my thing," if you decide to go, and can get some people, let me know!

David- I have an old friend who is from Godalmig...and is a huge Tobago enthusiast, used to live there for a while. The name Steve Vaile ring a bell? Just a thought-

mr Brian Ferguson of Castara used to take people out fishing in his open boat. You have to bring tackle with You. He is very kind and will prepare a delicious meal for You as well if asked kindly. I left an Ambassadeur 10000 reel with him 2 years ago and You might borrow it if it still is there. We went with him on three separate occasions and could support ourselves on the fish caught during the week! Probably had a bit of luck there, though. I used mainly large rapala wobblers in white/red and "sardine" colours. Got a few smaller fish on a "Mörrum" spinner as well (ABU Garcia lures). Brian is a super person and very honest but get a fixed price before getting off. Perhaps times have changed and prices gone up but this was definitely the most memorable activities we had in Tobago.
