Hi to everyone out there.

My girlfriend and I will be arriving in Tobago this Saturday (25/1/03) and we've got a query about paying for accomodation once we're there. We've noticed that most of the hotels/guesthouses/hosthomes shown on most websites we've visited and in travel books show prices in US $ Dollars yet no prices are quoted in local TT $ Dollar currency. Since we would prefer to pay for most things in Tobago using local cash currency, due to the fact we,ll be utilising Tobagos ATM machines, will we be able to pay for our stay in the various guesthouses (we,re travelling around Tobago for 4 weeks) using TT $ Dollars or will we have to take an amount of US $ Dollar travellers cheques / US $ currency with us,or the final option(which I don,t really want to do) and that is pay for our stay using my credit card!?!? Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks again.

Dear Kevin

We would recommend to take USD trav.checks and/or USD cash with you (whereby the trav. checks are obviously the safer version). If you pay by credit card, you should check with the hotel/guesthouse if they charge USD or TTD (most places will be equipped with TTD credit card machines). The exchange rates vary a lot between different establishments when using credit cards in TTD (it could be anything from 6 TTD to 6.3 TTD to 1 USD). The USD cash rate with the banks at the moment is 1 USD to 6 TTD, when exchanging trav. checks the rate is better: 1 USD to 6.125 or even 6.13 TTD (yesterday's rate with RBTT Bank). We would recommend to check with the establishments where you want to stay what they charge in TTD and them compare it to the USD rate in order not to be ripped off with exchange rates.

Best regards
