Book car now or when there?

We're going to be staying in Castara end of August into September. We don't want a car for the whole two weeks because from past experiences in Greece we won't use it everyday or even everyother day.
We'll hopefully take a guided tour of the Island quite early on, probably try a bus trip into Scarborough and use a taxi for Sunday School and any other nights out of Castara (so we can both have a few Stags or Caribs?).
Does anyone know if it's realistic to arrange car rental at short notice and if so can that be done locally to Castara or would someone like Yes Tourism be able to help? We've not got a mobile that will work on Tobago (we've only got a pay-as-you-go!) - this is probably a very stupid question - but are there public phones in Castara?
Sorry lots of questions there.

Hi Julia
Yours is a very typical requirement, I imagine. Yes, arranging cars at busy times - such as in the high season - can obviously be a problem, but I would have thought you would be OK in August/September. Yes Tourism can obviously help, but Castara is a long way from the main tour operators and they won't be happy about delivery/collecting a car for just the odd day or two. I believe there is someone in Castara who has a couple of vehicles.
Over to you Steph - Help Needed.

Thanks for the replies Steve and Steph!
I had a look at your website Steph but couldn't see any mention of vehicle hire, only some lovely looking tours, so I didn't know you did that - now I do, so that is good news.

Are you and Brian easy to find in Castara? - You must be it's not a big place!

not big, but quite a bit of up and down....
when you reach in from scarborough you go down and UP UP UP again. that is where we are. easier is to give us a call from the cascreole reataurant (family) and we roll down. where are you staying, by the way?
hope for you it is close to the beach. hate walking the hills (wish I would love it, then I could loose some pounds

but cars are so comfortable....)
hear you, see you, have a good flight.... it is soo soon already!

I hate walking up hills too!
Luckily we are staying close to the beach - The Blue Mango - can't wait!
Getting very excited - we've never been to the Caribbean before - bit nervous about the 10 hour plus flight - looking forward to staying in Castara - relaxing - seeing the Island - eating fresh fish - snorkling - sampling the rum punch etc.
