myTobago – your questions, review and comment about Tobago

Hello all.
I am new to the board.
Me and my other half have just booked a cheap week staying at the Conrado at Pigeon Point through a company called Sportif as my husband windsurfs. We're going over Christmas and as we're on a budget we're staying at the Conrado. We've been told our daily 'wristbands' is in with the price through the Wow windsurf centre.
To be honest I am a bit put-off now from what everyone has said about the problems at Pigeon Point. As I said we're only there for a week and have never been to Tobago before. We plan to hire a car for a day to look around the island.
Part of me thinks we should cancel our holiday and re-book for somewhere else in the Carribean. Can someone tell me - is Pigeon Point really that bad for 1 week?

I've visited Tobago three times and, if not for reading online, I would not know about the problems at Pigeon Point. In the U.S., we're used to paying for access to state parks, so the $3U.S. at Pigeon Point seemed reasonable. The beach is beautiful and the facilities are good. We've never encountered any inhospitable behavior from anyone. It is full of tourists, yes, and there are nicer places on the island, but I don't think your holiday will be ruined. Unless you philosophically disagree with the policies and politics that surround Pigeon Point and local access, environmental issues, etc. These are bothersome to me, but on our last trip we still visited because we have a friend who works there.

If you like windsurfing you will not be disappointed.

Most of the windsurfing takes place in the lagoon behind Pigeon Point and around Buccoo Reef.

There are problems at Pigeon Point and these are mainly political and concern the private company that seems to be trying to monopolise an area of natural beauty.

Many (including me) boycott the area because of this but that should not spoil your holiday ... enjoy it, it is a lovely place ... see for yourself ... and enjoy the day trip around Tobago and form your own opinions.

Hi, we returned from Tobago in July and there was a court case while we were there relating to Pigeon Point - the government are in the process of getting it back...does anybody know any more details or the outcome of the case?

Yes, as reported elsewhere in this forum, a deal has been struck between the owners and the Tobago government (THA) for the purchase of the land. When the deal is likely to be concluded is anybody's guess, but at least its a move in the right direction.
