Supermarket and Fish

Hi,

We are staying at a villa in March, having previously stayed at hotels on the Island, so this is our first self catering trip.

I have noted lots of comments to the Pennysavers supermarket in Canaan, being the cheapest (and best?) supermarket on the Island - Is this still the preferred shop in the area, or am I right in thinking that a new store may have opened?

Also where is best to buy fresh fish from? I remember a place between Mount Irvine Bay and Stonehaven Bay that used to sell fish from about 3.00pm onwards.

Finally, what would you expect to pay?

Thanks

Mat

Hi Mathew,
depending on where you stay, let me point out 2 more locations of good supermarkets.
1) Another Pennysavers in Carnbee, somewhat smaller than the one in Canaan, is located in Carnbee (direction Buccoo on the left) just before junction to the right is direction Buccoo, left to junction Shirvan Road.
2) Gourmet Foods is of a bit better quality (a bit more choice and a newer interior), is somewhat more expensive. Location from Carnbee to the left direction Shirvan Road junction, not far before that junction on your left.
Hope I'm clear enough, (have no idea about the fish),

regards, Roel

Hi Mathew

You can get fresh fish at Mount Irvine Beach every afternoon. You can't miss it - the fishermen sell their catch from tressle tables on the beach, immediately adjacent to the main north coast road, just before the main Mt.Irvine Beach Facilities. I don't know about cost, but it's a fraction of what you might expect over here.

Roel has answered your question about supermarkets. Morshead Gourmet Foods are our favourite. Yes, as Roel says, they are more expensive than PennySavers, but there is a better range of imported goods. It's Waitrose compared to Asda. Unlike the others, it can be a little difficult to find if you don't know the area. Basically after turning onto the Shirvan (north coast) road from the Crown Point-Scarborough Claude Noel Highway, turn RIGHT at the first bend, a little over 1/2-mile from the Highway. The turn is immediately after Me-Shells Restaurant on the right. Then, about 200m up that road, turn right into the unmade potholed drive and forecourt of a newish looking commercial unit. Drive straight across the forecourt and down a ramp at the other side. Morshead's is "beneath" the building.

Across the street from Pennysavers. Not cheap but good quality and the fellow there is a huge help. We purchased a huge bag of flash frozen prawns and had a 3 day feast!!

Cheers!
