Snorkeling in Tobago in June?

My partner and I are planning our two week honeymoon and we're currently looking at Tobago. We're thinking one week in Castara (either Blue Mango or Castsara Retreats) and then 7 days in Speyside or Charlottsville. We are most interested in snorkeling and seeing the stars at night, as we get a fair bit of neither in London, but I fear the June weather.

We don't mind some rain, but if the run off fogs the water the whole time I fear we're not likely to see many fish. A friend of mine was there in Novemeber and she said the water was cloudy the whole time, although the island itself was beautiful.

From what I've seen on this site I am sure that I'd love to visit Tobago, but for my honeymoon, I wonder if another location with a bit less rain might be a better idea.

Anyone with experience of snorkelling Tobago in the rainy season have any thoughts?

Many thans in advance. This is a brilliant site.

Hi Pen,

We were in Tobago last year, May 19th - June 4th, we had one rainy day, other than that only breif showers which were quite refreshing and made no difference to the quality of the water for snorkeling.

June is best time of year with May and April.

Snorkelling should be no problem although with the rains and damage of 2004 there is the possibility that some areas on the Caribbean side may still be recovering.

As for stars do this ...

Go to Englishmans ... there is no artificial light whatsoever ... just park on the road near the entrance to Englishmans Bay and turn the headlights off.

Not only will you be treated to the night sky in all it's glory but you will also have the firefly display in the surrounding rainforest ... you may find it difficult to tell if you are seeing stars or fireflies !!

Walk up and down the road, take in the sounds of the rainforest and see the sights ... truly awesome.

Cheers
