myTobago – your questions, review and comment about Tobago

I will be visiting Tobago from February 19th - February 27th. I will be bringing my fly rod and as many flies I can tye between now and then. I'm looking for one of two things here. The first and most desirable would be a fellow fly fisherman visiting during the same time period. The second would be any fly fisherman who's fished the island with any degree of success. I'm looking mainly for suggestions on places to go and what type of flies I should make to bring. Anyone?

Joshua, looking for fellow fishers leaves on th 27th February I arrive on the 27th February, Toine & Lia, keen fishers, arrive on the 13th of March I leave on the 13th March.

Life is really unfair

So if I can hijack a bit of Joshua's thread and ask if any fishers are there between 27th Feb & 12 March

Maybe I'm asking for too much. Okay, I don't need any fishing buddies, I just need some insight. Does anyone have that to offer?

We can look on the bright side though, the island won't be over fished anytime soon!

Hi Joshua,

In the main article about fishing Tobago’s waters, written by Steve Pitts, you’ll find some insight information about the hot spots and fishing tactics. In general, the tactics you should use don’t differ that much from what you would be using while fishing the Florida Keys, Bahama’s or other Caribbean flats. Like everywhere else you have to make sure you’re there at right time; dusk and dawn.
Looking at the photos in the fishing sections, it seems to me that Steve Pitts or one of his companions knows his way around with fly and rod. You could try contact him.
As far as I know; at Pigeon Point you can find a guide how will take you out fly fishing around the Buccoo area. Last time we visited Tobago we saw Grand Slam II at Pigeon Point boarding fly fisherman. You’ll find the details about Grand Slam and Kester Herbert in the fishing section ( In the menu; Out & About, under Activities).

Are you loking for a guide or are you happy doing your own thing?

If a guide is your prefered access to bonefish and permit, then Kester Herbert is your man. His details are within the fishing pages of the activities section.

Species to expect on fly gear (from the shore or flats) are bones, tarpon, snook, permit, barracuda, jacks and snapper. That should keep you entertained!

I'm going to be in Tobago Feb. 17-March 3, and planning on bringing my surf casting gear to do a bit of fishing. Does anyone have a place to point me to where I can identify Tobago fish that I might catch, what is good eats, and what should be released?

Take a look at the day catch of the fisherman at Pigeon piont, Mt Irvine or Castara. Some of the fish they bring home is what you can catch fishing from the rocks or from the beaches. The bigger fish like tuna, kingfish, mahi,mahi are caught futher offshore. The fish you see you can eat.They won't bring in any fish if you can't eat it.
