myTobago – your questions, review and comment about Tobago

Hello everyone

I am planning on coming to Tobago with my mum to celebrate her retirement the first two weeks in June 2005. I'm a possessed climbing woman and wondered if there are any climbing routes or bouldering on the island anywhere for a day or two of strenous activity? Does anyone know of any climbers on the island who offer "tours" or guiding. I know its a long shot but would love some feedback

Also I'm a keen repenique drummer and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for where to go to catch live bands and "traditional" dancing?

I'm interested to see what replies you get to this post too.

Regarding climbing, virtually every rock that you see from the roads will have something growing on it - I can't think of any area that has bare rocks to climb, but I'm waiting to be surprised.

As regards music, the only advice that I can give is that unlike many other countries that I've visited, the music here is very much related to the season. Having never travelled in June, I'm not sure what will be seasonsal, but Parang and Soca will probably not be on the menu, and Dub (Reggae) may be back in fashion. At the moment (Jan/Feb), everything is hotting up for Carnival, and steel pans are the main focus. Maybe you should have a go? If you like African Drums, the Indigo restaurant at Pleasant Prospect has live band shows on Friday evenings as far as I know, but check first before you book - things change rapidly on this island.

The only place I can think that would give a real climber a challenge would be the 'end of the ridge'.

This is where the backbone of the mountain range of Tobago ends on the Caribbean side somewhere between Castara Bay and Celery Bay.

It is a bare faced cliff of solid rock, I guess about 200 - 300 feet high and is pretty daunting to look at, let alone climb.

You would need a boat to get to the bottom and I guess that many fishermen would discourage you.

Go have a look when you get there.

music: spend a wednesday night in castara at the boathouse, first pan then african drums or local band.... just make sure they have it in the so called low season.... 6607354 and they will tell you then....
