Hi,

I am off to Tobago (finally) a week on saturday. We are going to stay at Dr. P's in Charlotteville for the first week and sonehaven villas for the second week.

I have a few queries:

a) is it possible to rent a car or a scooter once we get to charlotteville or are we best off doing so at the airport? we are not intending to use a car for every day of our stay so I wondered if we could hire one on a day to day basis from where we are going to be based

b) Will a taxi driver take us to charlotteville from the airport?

thankyou in advance for any advice.

Emilia

p.s. this website is extremely helpful and well designed!!!

I don't know about car hire in Charlotteville, but I would advise against driving yourself to Charlotteville the evening you arrive. It may not look far on the map, but Tobago roads aren't like British roads. They are windy and on the edges of cliffs and have goats and dogs wandering on them. They require all your concentration even in the day time. I would allow a couple of hours to drive to Charlotteville in the day time plus time to stop en route, and I wouldn't attempt it in the evening after a long flight.

According to http://www.mytobago.info/taxis02.php a taxi to Charlotteville would cost US$55 during the day.

http://www.mytobago.info/carrental05.php#Region%204 lists no car rental companies in Charlotteville, but three in Speyside (which is maybe 15 minutes drive from Charlotteville).

It might be worth pointing out that most of the Vehicle Hire companies are only too pleased to deliver a car to you if you call them on the phone, so take all of the phone numbers with you or book before you travel! Probably the same with a scooter or Motorbike.

You really don't have to go to their offices to hire a vehicle. I would however use one of the reputable companies to make sure that you don't end up with an un-insured jallopy.

Might be worth contacting Yes Tourism to ask if the companies that they deal with all (or any) deliver to Charlotteville at no extra cost, and if the do bikes as well as cars. I imagine that they would deliver, providing that you were taking the vehicle for a week or more. I hired from Shermans via 'Yes' last visit, and was very pleased with the service from both.

Hi Emilia,
I dont know of any hire car places in Charlottville but Bluewaters Inn at Speyside do arrange for hire cars and we have had no problems with them for the last 2 years.

At that end of the Island it will be a car and to be honest the roads are very steep and twisty so a Scooter would not the the best thing.

Full agreement with Stephen on getting a taxi from the airport if your flying from the UK it will be around 5pm local time but your brain will be telling you its around 10pm and it will be getting dark by the time you get to Charlottville which will not help. Leave it to the experts and get a taxi.

Wish I was coming with

Kevin

Emilia, definitely DO NOT attempt to drive to C'ville on your first day.By the time you get to Roxbro'/Speyside it will be dark. The road from Roxbro' to C'ville has been badly hit and damaged so that there are places where it is extremely uneven and where it is reduced in width to less than a single carriageway!!!!On top of this it is a switchback type of road so even in daylight you need total concentration. As for car hire I agree with Steve F,contact Yestourism for car hire and to arrange transport to C'ville from the airport.
Have great holiday.Regards from an extremely beautiful sunny day in C'ville.

would recommend yes-tourism too. let them check if a reantal from the airport would deliver to charlotteville. so you can drive yourselves back to the airport the last day and just drop of the car. most places you have to leave late morning anyway, so you can take your time and have lunch on the way to the airport. make it your last "day out"....

enjoy your holiday

Thankyou all for all this advice!!!

So in summary,

I should take a taxi to Charlotteville from airport, ask yes tourism about the possibility of delivering a car to me or venture to speyside for local agencies.

Thanks again, and am really looking forward to it now!!!
