Greetings...love your site and all of the info.. I am visting Tobago around the 15th of April and it will be a private holiday. A friend of a friend has a place that she is renting where I'll have a secluded beach, room, kitchenette and en suite... It is located in Pleasant Prospect. Is this close to any type of markets where I can buy my own food? Is there any night life here as I am on the young side (28yrs)? What about purchasing wine to store for myself, where can I buy bottles of wine? I'm sure I'll have more questions for you... I look forward to leaving NY and this snow ridden place....

Unfortunately it's not located close to a market. The night life in Tobago is road kill. If you're looking for night life, go to its sister isle, TRINIDAD. Wonderful food, shopping and clubbing.

Hi Coco.
Pleasant Prospect is a nice little hamlet, but there's nothing there other than a couple of small local shops and bars (and Indigo restaurant). Wherever you are in Tobago, you are best hiring a vehicle. If you have transport, then less than 10 minutes away, half-way to the airport, you have the biggest (? a relative term) supermarket on the island - Penny Savers. You can't miss it. A few yards further on and opposite is a good wine shop. See Glyn Kirpalani's excellent topic "Nightlife" in this forum. Enjoy!!

we had a great holiday at Le Grand Courlan and went Trinidad for carnival. We got mugged at knifepoint and I got cut. Staff at the Trinidad Hilton told us this is common and said that we should stay in the hotel at night. We shall be back to Tobago next year, but Trinidad – NO WAY!

Ronnie, I think your experiences were exceptional. Yes, Carnival can be a problem - exactly like major carnivals and public events around the world. Yes, it is true that Trinidad, and areas of Port Of Spain in particular, has a serious crime problem, but this is not something that should affect visitors to Tobago who go to Trinidad on organised tours. Trinidad is a wonderful place to visit - although I would personally be very cautious about 'partying' there other than in the company of someone who really knows the country and their way around.

Ronnie - I agree with Steve, having spent 10 days wandering around downtown Port of Spain with my wife on foot including independence day celebrations and trips to remote quiet beaches as well as Maracas Bay (superb). We were never hassled or threatened, although I do sympathise with your attack as these things happen - but have you been to London lately? We found the Trinis very friendly - I once had a fright when three guys with machetes approached me when I was snorkeling alone in a river, but all they wanted was to tell me where the best place to see fish was then wondered off. I wouldn't recommend being alone on a beach anywhere in the world these days though.

Trinidad.........We were on the island from 16th- 20th February this year-10 days or so before carnival. We have friends ex. Trinidad residents now in the USA plus UK ex pats who lived there with my in laws from the early 50's to the late 60's. The number of emails we had saying we should not go because it was dangerous, full of bin laden supporters (saw one sprayed sign with his name. We were also warned by people on Tobago. In the event it was great. Yes it had- apparently -changed not for the better from 40 years ago. Where hasn't? We walked Queens Park, the botanical gardens and up towards St. Annes in the near dark and felt quite safe. same walking round the centre of P O S during the day. Same for San Fernando. i would not walk down badly lit side streets/allys at night.....but i wouldn't do that in London or Manchester or Cheltanham either. What I did see were people-Americans I'm afraid wandering around Piarco airport witrhout a clue(Not looked at myTobago(!) or any other tour guide, goverment advisory) with gold jewellery dripping off them, large conspicupous wallets and accepting "taxi" rides from the first person they see as they come throgh with their bags! Dare i say common sense sometimes gets left at home?
