Walking distances

Can anyone tell me how long it might take to walk from Castara Retreat to Englishman's Bay? We'll be in Castara for a week in June and we are trying to decide wether or not to hire a car. We are both quite comfortable walking and generally prefer to go carless, but we do also hope to explore a bit. Are we looking at a 2 mile walk? 6? 10?

Two would be great and six would be fine, but 10 miles one way is more than we'll want to do.

We'll be off to Speyside and then the south for a few days each during the second week of our trip and we do think we'll arrange a car for that.

I would guess it is about 3 miles but it really depends if you follow the road or go through the 'bush'.

If you go off road it will be hard work with very steep hills.

Even the roads are steep and you would probably add a mile with all the corners.

Hard work in the heat either way, although much of it will be shaded by the overhanging rainforest.

There are some nice tracks between Castara and Englishmans that lead to otherwise inaccessible beaches.

Sure you will enjoy it but be prepared for a good hike and take the necessaries.

Regards

We did the walk last year and it was quite hard work even though we are quite fit - mainly because of the heat, but it is ok and didn't take too long. We walked on the road but watch out for runaway bulls!

If you can I would hire a jeep so you can see different places like Parlatuvier Bay and Charlotteville - the island is so small so you can easily drive all over during your stay :)

Hi,

in my case, it took 90 minutes from Englishman's Bay to Castara. Because it was quite hot, I walked slowly, made a lot of stops for photos and to observe the animals (birds, cows and these bigger lizards). I would estimate "45 minutes" for a walk during the cooler afternoon.
