myTobago – your questions, review and comment about Tobago

I will be in tobago later this month and wanted to take a trip up to Pirates Bay. I was told by a local that I can hike it or take a boat over. Has anyone ever done either of these?

What's Pirate's Bay like? Is it only for snorkelling and therefore a bit deep or is it at all similar to Pigeon Point with no waves and fairly shallow for easy bathing, especillay for someone who cannot swim?

Hi Dave,
The hike from Charlottville is about 20 minutes and very up and very down both ways and quite hot.
The local fishermen will run you over for a small fee from the jetty in Charlottville.

The waves depend a lot on the weather but it's usually not too bad, the beach shelves pretty quickly but I think its OK for non swimmers, (small tip try and get a snorkelling life vest from a dive shop in the UK it gives a bit more confidence in the water and then poor and non swimmers can see all the fish too). There some good snorkelling spots at either end of the beach where you see the rocks breaking the surface.

About the only drawback of the beach I found when I was thee last October is there is not a lot of it when the tide comes in so make sure you keep you clothes well up from the high water mark.
