Spiders & Jet Skis

Hello Forum Users,
My wife and I will be spending our first anniversary on the island of Tobago, and I was hoping you could help with a couple of queries.
Firstly spiders. My wife HATES spiders but would love to take a tour in the rain forest - would this be recommended?
Secondly jet skis. We both love jet skiing but we're finding information hard to find regarding them. Is it possible to do jet skiing on Tobago and if it is are there certain beaches that you can find them?
Thanks very much in anticipation
Stuart.

Hi Stuart
Welcome aboard!
It may not totally satisfy your wife, but there are very few dangerous spiders on Tobago. Having said that, there are some pretty big, but non-dangerous, specimens around. Its the luck of the draw. 99 people could go into the rainforest and not see a single spider, then the 100 could see a whopper. Be aware, though, that they are always more frightened of you than you will be of them. See our article in Miscellaneous/Health & Safety/Insects & Nasties for further details.
The seas off Tobago are a little too choppy for jet skiing. However, I believe that both R&Sea Divers and World of Watersports do have jet skiis. See our Out & About/Activities/Sailing & Watersports/Other Water Activities for contact details.

Hi Stuart
I hate spiders, too, and I hate that I hate them because I waste too much time thinking about them, avoiding them and being scared of them!
I have never seen a spider in Tobago. Seriously! Not in the rainforest, nor in hotels, nor anywhere. The scariest thing I saw was a huge snake, and that was dead on a road up north.
Hope this helps a bit
Rachel

Hi Folks,
It's the wife here!! Thanks for your replies. One more spider question though. Are there many spiders to be found around the hotels? Although you haven't seen one Rachel, the thought of one crawling up my leg in the middle of the night would give me nightmares for months!!!!!!!!
Steve, for our first wedding anniversary we would like to plan something special that we will always remember. Could you recommend anything that is slighty different from the norm?

Hi Louise,
I'm not the biggest fan of spiders either - but I haven't seen anything worrying on Tobago! Certainly not in the hotels we've used, anyway. (Grafton Beach and Inn on the Bay)
Hope this helps!

I know this probably wouldn't help or anything

but when I used to live in Tobago, i've been bitten by some tiny spiders a few times but nothing happened to me. Nothing to worry about down there(just shake out your shoes before you put them on, just as an extra precaution). Rarely would you spot a spider though. Just go and have a great time

Hi Louise
A lot will depend upon where you are staying. To be honest, its much the same as here at home. You are more likely to see spiders in cottages in country than modern hotels in urban areas. I must confess that I shudder at the thought of a spider walking over me in the night, but I can honestly tell you that its never happened (at least, not that I was aware of it). No, spiders are not an issue on Tobago any more than here at home.

Saw loads of lizards around the gardens at the Coco Reef, so made sure we didn't scare them away. Reckon whilst they were around they'd be efficient at keeping the spider population under control!
Never saw a single spider in 2 weeks!

Hello!
This spider discussion really is attracting attention!
Let's face it, few people like them, or are not bothered by them.
I really don't like them either, however my fear has subsided over the years by forcing myself to somehow get them out of my house without harming them (i don't like killing things - apart from mosquitos and flies that is

).
Now to the point: extra reassurance along with everyone else - i stayed in a medium sized hotel last year (and am going back this year): Blue Waters Inn, literally set on the edge of the rainforest, just on the beach - never saw a single one.
The important thing for you and your anniversary will be to put it out of your mind as much as you can, and have a wonderful time. With Tobago you are in for such a treat - the popularity and activity on this website just shows how passionate people are

Hope this helps.
Have a superb time!

One more thing - there is a specific discussion forum for Weddings and Honeymoons - there might be iodeas there for special things to do...
Enjoy!

You make an excellent point, Gareth.
I know that some people are 'uncomfortable' with them, but the little house lizards, the Geckos, are really your best friend. They're totally harmless and keep rooms clear of all insects.

Give me spiders any day -
Jet skis?
Now there's one thing I do hate - especially when I visit Tobago.
Cheers

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but whilst taking an early morning dip in the pool where we were staying in Tobago something told me to look to my left, and there, in the pool filter hole in the pool was the biggest spider i'd ever seen! It was about 4 or 5 inches across and just sat there doing not very much at all.I on the other hand decided to beat a rather hasty retreat.I got a glass and managed to persuade it to climb in then put a pringles cap over the end and promptly marched him off to the bottom of the drive and let him go on a rock. I'm not usually that bothered by spiders but that one was rather large but also pretty docile so all was fine....they may be rare but they're around so keep your eyes peeled!
