Hello,
I am doing some research on car rental in Tobago. Am I being too unrealistic in trying to find a most economical car for about $ 500.00 US, or less, for the month?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi Justin

You are used to very cheap motoring costs in Canada. Sadly, the same can't be said for Tobago. If you manage to find anything at that price, make sure that you have the telephone number of a good reliable taxi service to come and rescue you on a regular basis and/or a good pair of walking boots. In practise you'll need to nearly double that figure for anything half-decent. Sorry!

Justin,

When are you visiting? This may affect what kind of deal you can get - you can sometimes get a longer-term deal (eg one month) for about TT$150 per day, but this is more likely when the island is quieter, eg May/June time. If you are here in February (when Carnival is on) or Easter (also a busy time), rental agencies will not be so keen to have a car out on cheaper deals.

I would suggest emailing or calling some of the rental agencies to see what they can offer, bearing the above in mind. Also, be very careful to read the small print (see Tiff Lynch's recent posting under Car Rental forum)!

Good luck :)

J Tomasulo:

 As an alternative how about hiring a driver?...thereby eliminating costs usually associated with renting. Of course that does limit you exploring the Island at your leisure, but who knows you might be able to work something out with the driver.
