Would love to bring back a bottles of rum for gifts back home. Can anyone offer some information on the rum from Trinidad/Tobago?

What a nice person you are - rum from Trinidad/Tobago will be a very acceptable gift I'm sure!

We liked "White Oak" as an all purpose white rum - rather like Bacardi in character. There are numerous golden and dark rums. It all comes down to taste with these - some are more caramel tasting than others.

If you go through Piarco airport - rum in the airside duty free shops is very cheap indeed (especially compared to the prices we pay in the UK with taxes and duty).

Enjoy!

If taking rum back to the States none of the US carriers will allow you on the aircraft with Puncheon Rum, all other brands are ok though. I also think you are ok on BWIA to take it.

Apparently it is a fire risk  .

It states 'Not less than 75% Alc/Vol'on the bottle! It is ROCKET FUEL, BE WARNED! It gets you drunk very very quickly from the legs up! And it's only $56TT

I find the problem with Puncheon is that if you are sitting down, you don't realise what has happened until you try to stand up!!!!!!

Puncheon Rum sounds Wicked! Question though, how's the next day? Is it pretty painful?

Romana,no need to worry about the next day as you can't actually drink much of it at all before it knocks you out!
David is quite right, it gets you from the legs up! :D
I've still got loads left as i'm treating it with the respect it deserves.

if you don't want a hangover with puncheon rum, you chase it with cold water. do not mix it with anything sweet like coke.

you should be fine the next day. goes good with carib chasers also.

if in fact you are hungover, you simply need more of the "dog that bit you" in the morning and you won't notice.

i am a retired rumaholic. at least until the next time. . .

Folks,

I can't believe you are really talking about DRINKING this pure alcohol called Puncheon!
Romana, take my advice and stay with any other rum, Carib, Stag or - if necessary - Mackeson but the only thing I would do with Puncheon is to clean the motor of my car!

Cheers

I must have died and gone to heaven! A thread for fans of Puncheon run!! WOOHOO.

Romana asked about the next day. Well Ramona, I'm the most sensitive person on the planet when it comes to getting a hangover. 1 glass of wine and I'm sick. More than 2 Caribs and I'm sick. A glass of scotch and I'm sick. It's terrible, I can hardly drink anything without getting deathly sick.

I have been drinking Puncheon for a decade (on the advice of my father in law). I have gotten myself paralyzed from the eye balls down with it on many occasions. It's a marvelous analgesic, but manages not to impair your mind too much. I've mixed it with everything under the sun, especially Coca Cola (it's hard to sing the song without it). I usually start sipping it around 10:00 am and sip it straight through 'till nightfall. It has a remarkable ability to keep you cool in the tropical heat. I know many very very old people in Trinidad who drink it every day and swear it is their secret to longevity (most of them drink it pure).

I have never had a single hangover from Puncheon. Not even a hint of one. The only side effect is a bit of a dry mouth the next day. All the local Puncheon afficionados claim that the purity of Puncheon is what makes it such a gentle drink. I tend to agree. From my experience, the more darkness the drink has, the more additives and flavors the drink has the harsher the side effects the next day.

I strongly recommend sipping Puncheon throughout the day rather than gulping it during a short sitting. Being 150 proof (75% alcohol) it does pack a stiff punch! Maybe that's why it's called Puncheon (-:

Anyone getting a hangover should blame the other stuff they drank that same day. I know of no one getting sick on Puncheon alone.

As mentioned, some airlines no longer allow overproof drinks on their planes. Check with your airline. Apparently the stuff is flammable. I guess that means that 40% alcohol is not flammable. I know that many people will put food coloring in the Puncheon and pour it in a different bottle to "disguise" it. A certain type of red plum is often used to color it. Of course I'm not telling anyone to do this as a means of sneaking it on an airplane, a-hem.

Hy Bryn and all others,

OK, it looks like some people really like Puncheon (I will never understand :-k ) but to set things clear:

its not 75 % alcohol its "NOT LESS THAN 75%" #-o

Enjoy your Puncheon drinks what means there will be more Carib left for me
(do you hear me David?)

I'm very envious, Gisela. Just make sure you leave some for when we return in Sept/Oct! Perhaps you will be back then too.

Say hello to Castara for us.

1919! A Fantastic Gift

Without a doubt, 1919, at about $21 US in a beautiful decanter and packed in a sturdy box makes a wonderful gift. Smooth and sweet. We bring back 6 bottles each and every trip. You have to purchase at duty free (Piarco) and then they deliver it to the gate. No Puncheon allowed as it could be used as a terrorist cocktail!
