We have just returned from our first holiday in Tobago, staying at the Toucan Inn, and I don't think it will be our last!

We had one of the cabana rooms around the pool, which we liked, although some people felt that there wasn't enough storage space. However, we found one wardrobe, three deep drawers and two shallow ones, plus the shelves below the bedside tables, to be perfectly adequate for a holiday which didn't need any dressing up and for which the clothing we took was lightweight and not bulky. The bathrooms were small but adequate, the showers had hot water every time, the towels were changed daily, the bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows and there was a safety deposit box in the room. There wasn't really anywhere to store your suitcases, but we managed to put them where they didn't cause an obstruction. The air conditioning worked, albeit rather noisily so we didn't use it overnight.

We would echo the comments made about slow breakfast service - one one morning it took an hour for us to complete our meal. However, on the plus side for the first time in our Caribbean visiting history every breakfast arrived in the correct order! The problem seemed to be the speed which the cooked items appeared from the kitchen - if they got behind everything else did. We had Valentines Day Dinner there and the restaurant managed to cope extremely well with over 90 diners and no undue hold-ups.

The staff were great on the whole - special mentions going to Christine on Reception who was always cheerful and helpful, and Beverley who worked in the restaurant at breakfast (service noticeably improved when she was on duty). A few staff were fairly quiet but if you made the time to talk to them you nearly always got a good response.

The position of the hotel was good too, within walking distance of many other restaurants. We didn't get much in the way of noise from the airport. The main noise problem was the roosters next door crowing from about 4.00 am onwards - ear plugs sorted that problem out!

The Toucan Inn doesn't have the gloss and facilities of the large, all-inclusive hotels, but we weren't paying these types of prices, and the size of the hotel lets you get to know your fellow guests over the course of your stay. It is very much a place where you are seen as a person and not just a room number.

We shall be back, I suspect!
