Le Grand report

Steve was kind enough to put my mind at rest when our hotel in Tobago was changed to “Le Grand Courlan”, as there had been bad reports about the hotel and I promised to give my opinion on our return to the U.K. so here goes.

We were met in reception with champagne cocktail {a good start} booked in by a charming young lady, and then taken to our room by Maria Yip-John
The general manager who we later found out did everything possible to make her guests have an enjoyable holiday.
The room was large with table and chairs and a very large bed, with a good size balcony that overlooked the beach and ocean, spotlessly clean with fruit and flowers on the dressing table, the bathroom included a shower in the bath, bidet, and wash basin, all spotless but looked, like the room, in need of some updating. {Don’t shower at peak periods i.e. between 7pm and 8pm water pressure low} otherwise fine.
My wife and I are not keen on all inclusive unless you are miles from any other eating places, but I must say the choice of where to eat and what to eat was impressive with the Caribbean Bistro “buffet” on one floor and The Pinnacle Restaurant “waiter service” on the upper floor, which had moonlight views at night and ocean views at breakfast with a welcome breeze making it a wonderful place to enjoy the excellent food.
Okay so what was wrong, well very little actually, the beach is a little disappointing, and you had to get up early to towel place if you wanted the rather antiquated sun beds on the beach, but if the hotel was not full to the brim, there where sun shades and beds around the ample pool with a nice swim up bar if the very hot weather made you feel dry.
To sum up, we had one of the best holidays we have ever had; the snorkelling on the far end of the beach was magic, with all types of fish and even squid,
And the sunsets from our balcony were breathtaking. Beware the cocktails, a “ Mudslide “ or Tobago Sunset” added to the red wine with dinner can make the steps back to your room hazardous, we loved the friendly staff who made our day with there sense of humour. If you are a snap your finger for service type of person, don’t go the Caribbean, if you expect staff to bow and scrape, go to the far east, if you want a laid back no hurry holiday this is the place and this is the hotel.
