Hi Folks

As mentioned, I've been away for a few days enjoying a thoroughly wonderful weekend in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District at a family reunion to celebrate my parents Diamond Wedding Anniversary. With no offence, I decided to forget Tobago for a few days and so refrained from taking a laptop and/or checking my forum post notifications.

So, my apologies for the marketing **** that got through. This is a daily occurence, I'm afraid. I've used various techniques to trap and minimise the problem, but we still get around 5 attempted account registrations a day and 1-2 attempted posts.

The vast, vast, vast, majority of these originate in America. To be honest, I am totally fed up with it. I have now taken to simply banning all ISPs that allow their users to post this sort of stuff. I currently have some 60 banned American ISPs on the list, compared to 32 for the rest of the world. I can only apologise to the many Americans who can no longer connect to myTobago. However, taking this action has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the amount of bogus accounts and spam/porn posts we get.

I have hopefully spotted and deleted all the offending spam and porn messages. However, if anyone spots one anywhere in the forum, PLEASE let me know exactly which forum/sub-forum it is in and the Topic subject (or, ideally, the exact URL to the post as shown in your browser's Address bar).

I just revisit a post I made several months ago, to find it had been edited. Even my profile was edited, who would do such a thing ?

It was a simple message to Tobagonians, its clear these people are monsters.

Our security systems lock a user out if they attempt to repeatedly enter wrong passwords while logging in. This prevents attempts to "guess" a user's password. Nobody but the user, or someone with access to the user's computer (particularly if they use auto-log on) can edit the user profile - other than myself.

I have checked our logs and traced accesses to your account. There have only been two prior to yesterday - you, when you first registered the account and myself, when I edited your profile later.

You filed your original post without the courtesy of asking if I would help you to promote it. I let it stand. However, some weeks later you wrote asking for my support to promote the site, which you say is "designed by Tobagonians, for Tobagonians". Despite being somewhat uncomfortable with this slogan, I replied that I would be happy to do so when your site was finished. At the time, your web was a closed site allowing access to registered users only, yet giving no clear indication of why registration was required or what the site was about. Almost worse was the fact that there was absolutely no content other than a couple of introductory messages that basically said nothing. I invited you to contact me when the site was completed and had a reasonable amount of content.

On 19th June you sent me a highly offensive reply. It was insulting to me personally and to overseas visitors in general. Frankly, I would prefer to have no alliance – and certainly cannot help promote – anyone who is so clearly racist and who exhibits such xenophobic feelings. I am simply astonished that you bothered to contact me given your obvious feelings. Frankly, you need to take a reality check. Needless to say, I was no longer inclined to support your website and so edited your original post and profile to remove the name of the website that you wanted me to promote.

If that all makes me a monster, so be it. However, Marlon, may I suggest that you grow up and stop trying to cause mischief.

Offensive matters

Hi Steve
I have been keeping a watching brief on some of the more outlandish comments which appeared when you were having an enjoyable time celebrating your parents diamond wedding. It seems sad that people would want to take unfair advantage of a site that is so attuned to Tobago and to the majority of its people and is doing nothing other than promoting in the most prolific way the honest and well thought views and utterances of normal people who enjoy the place so much that they are prepared to spend time and effort in answering - which at times must seem mundane - queries to people such as myself who until June had never visited the Island. That you personally have to take abuse from people because you are maintaining an integrity on the site is just downright unfair and in reality is beyond comrehension. Furthermore even when you are seemingly hit in the solar-plexus by some individuals you still allow their web-site to be quoted speaks volumes of your charecter but may I suggest that you remove any mention to this web as from my quick graze through it appears to be no more than a very very inferior copy of MyTobago. You are no monster Steve but you certainly have a huge heart With best wishes NeilC

Hi Neil

Thanks for you support.

This site is not for me; its not even for you, the reader. As I say on the Home page, myTobago.info is my tribute to all the wonderful Tobagonians who have made my visits so memorable for close-on 50 years. Needless to say, I am not popular with all of them. I am probably loved and loathed in equal measure. However, I think I can safely say that it is the 'winners' who love me and the 'losers' who loathe me.

Ignore this silly boy - which is what I imagine him to be. my Tobago is the Tobagonian who, having heard I was "on island", travelled from the other end of the island and sat outside our villa until I returned, simply to thank me for mentioning his deserving services. my Tobago is the young manager of a local guesthouse who telephoned me from Tobago on his 18th birthday simply knowing I would want to share the experience with him. my Tobago is the taxi driver who took me on an island tour ( a few years before myTobago), ending the day with high tea at his family home. These and countless other stories are what drives me. I'm a big boy and can handle a bit of s**t (just to keep this on topic).
