Plant a tree

Some airlines have links from their websites to carbon-offset programmes? Has anyone ever contributed and offset their own part of the flights Co2s?
There are lots of schemes eg; Plant a tree for example...by the time it grows will it be too late to make a difference?
There are other options what would you do?
Any thoughts?
I'm am trying to avoid a guilt trip when I book my next my flight to Tobago!

Don't have guilt trip.Scientific, not empiric evidence shows that we are at the bottom dip of a mini ice age. There are Chinese navigation charted routes that crossed the North polar region and no where is there mention of ice!Dated c 850AD.The Scandinavians(Vikings) settled Greenland and called it so because that is what it was----they grew grapes there.Historical fact (650 til at least 1150).
In fact Greenland was a staging post for the Farland(Canada?).
Just go and enjoy,David (a realist)
ps In Roman times Britain was renowned for it's grapes and wines.

Right now the Gulf Stream goes quite high up, give us a "warm" climate here in the north. The salt water is heavy and sink down in the Northen Atlantic between Greenland and Norway, warmer water from the Gulf Stream come instead. The cold salty water goes deep down and goes to the south. It´s working as a major water pump.
A new Ice-Time will at first start with warmer weather, the ice start melting and millions of sweet water goes to the Northen Atlantic. And when the heavy salty water get less and less, the "water pump" will slow down. Less warm water will come up from the Gulf stream, the "pump" might even totally stop, that will give England and the Northen Europe a climate compared with the northen Canada. And the weather start getting colder again, the ice and snow start buildt up, and that can be the beginning to a new Ice Time. MOre ice and snow will also reflect the sun.
It´s a fact that the temp is higher now a days, and that will affect every country in one way or an other. When our worlds AC doesn´t work as normally, a lot of bad things can happen. The southern part of the Swedish mountains does have trees al the way up, some 50-60 years ago it wasn´t like that, it was too cold!
A warmer climate can sound perfect for countries in the north, but in the end that also will give troubles all over the word.

I appreciate your replies and understand everyone has a different view on this matter. My interests was to see if anyone else had used a carbon-offset programme.
My intention was not to lead anyone into a heated debate about global warming. in hindsight I suppose all of us will do things differently and we have different views. We will always travel if we are lucky enough to be able to and also can afford to do so. Especially to Toabgo which is lovely - long may it stay that way.
The build up of C02 has increased by about 25 per cent since 1950 -means the suns warmth is trapped causing global temps to rise. Some co2 are natural bi-products - however we produce them too as consumers.
