Hi...I am a single female travelling to Tobago alone at the end of April and I am wondering how safe it is. Also will I find things to do and will it be safe to go out at night alone? I will be renting a house and I love to cook...can you tell me what local fruits and vegetables are in season in late April. Thank you.

Hi Lala

I guess my immediate answer is that Tobago is probably a lot safer than downtown Newark. I mean that with absolutely no disrespect to Newark – a city I have never visited and know nothing about. I would have replied the same whether it be London or Smalltownville. The fact is, Tobago is no less safe than anywhere.
Obviously you must take all sensible precautions – exactly the same precautions that you would take at home. Lock your house and car doors. Don’t give lifts to strangers. Don’t invite anyone back to your house, etc.

There is always lots of all the usual tropical Caribbean fruit and vegetables in season and you will never have to drive far to find a local stall with fresh vegetables. Advise on how best to cook them will abound from the stall holder.

Enjoy and let us know how you get on.

Hi, you did not say where the house you have rented is, so we can't comment on how safe the area might be for walking around it at night but Steve is right - nowhere is absolutely safe these days. As for staying alone, I know a mid-70's Irish lady who has lived alone in Carnbee/Mount Pleasant villages for 11 years without problems, in fact receiving considerable care and attention from the village residents. You should have fun/relaxation, but if you want to meet other singles/groups then hook up on one of the myriad organised tours available (boats, rainforests, scuba courses etc etc) - you can leave this until after your arrival, as it won't be busy. The airport tourist office has loads of tour leaflets or check this site. Look my wife and I up in the unlikely event that you have any problems and need help, since we shall be privileged to live there from 26th April. Have fun, Glyn

Thank you Steve and Glyn for your responses. Actually this will be my fourth trip to Tobago (my second trip was for my wedding at Top O Tobago in 2000) but my first trip to Tobago alone. I am so in love with the island that I just can't seem to get enough! When travelling with my husband who is 6'8" and weighs 250 lbs I never have given any thought to my safety!

I am renting a house in Mount Pleasant for this trip (actually the house that my husband and I rented on our first trip to Tobago) and am also renting a jeep.

I usually have no trouble meeting people, but I just was not sure about the bar scene and whether going out alone would be a problem. I have made several friends in Tobago but since the faces seem to change quite often I am not sure who might still be around.

I do think that I will take your suggestions as to finding some kind of guided tour which would be a good opportunity to meet others. Agian thank you very much for your responses.
