Bringing in a Shipping Container from Miami

I need to furnish an apartment in Tobago and plan to fill a shipping container with building materials and furnishings. Does anyone have experience doing this? I brought a pair of large crates in five years ago and it was tricky to say the least.

Thanks, Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I've no experience of bringing in from Miami, but I bought a container in (via Trinidad), from the UK last year.... and my advice to anyone wishing to do the same would be.... DON'T!!!! It was a nightmare!!! It would, quite seriously, have worked out cheaper and easier for me to arrange flights for several friends from the UK, and have them bring a case or two at a time for me. It was something that I don't intend, EVER to repeat if I can avoid it!!

Good luck though - I'm sure that it must be easier from Miami!!

Lisa.

Lisa,

Thanks for the input. I know people who have done it without as much trouble as you describe but the potential for problems is huge. One thing that helps is if I can eliminate the stop in Trinidad and get it delivered directly to Tobago. There are certain building materials that I cannot get even in Trinidad so I will continue to plan. A shared container is all I need so maybe a local who does this regularly can help.
