Virgin Airlines Luggage/Medicines Advice

Hey all, just wondering if anyone has flown with Virgin recently and can give me any advice on whats allowed in hand luggage? Are you only allowed the see through bags, or can you take a normal bag as long as all liquids/medicines are in a clear bag inside? Im a bit confused about all this, as things seem to keep changing. Also, can you take prescribed medicines with you (both in hand and/or hold luggage) as long as you have the repeat prescription bit of paper? And can you take over the counter medicines and things like that, possibly even first aid travel kits and what have you? Oh, and are there any limits to the amount of liquids for anything?
Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Jolene
Regarding prescription medicines - you can carry them in hand luggage quote "in quantities sufficient for your journey" - but again they must be in a clear plastic sealable bag 20x20cm. I had both OTC and prescription items with me (nothing over 100ml size though) in a separate bag from my toiletries and had no problem going through Gatwick. I did have a copy of my prescription with me just in case - but it wasn't needed. you have to present the clear plastic bags separately from your hand luggage when you go through the security check - but after that you can obviously combine everything again.
Ref a medical kit - there is no problem in carrying pills/tablets and items like plasters as hand luggage. You will need to put creams and lotions in hold luggage (although I had some anti-bite cream with me - I know how quickly mozzies can get to me sometimes!).
Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for all the info. Ive checked out the Virgin site and found a few interesting things, so thats useful.
Jane, thats good to know about the hand luggage. I did visit my doc and ask about whether a repeat prescription or doctors letter would be needed for taking medicines, but he said a repeat prescrition would be all thats needed, although he wasnt really interested to be honest.

Is a copy of the repeat prescription ok to take, or does it need to be the original? And can you take liquids of any amount in the main luggage? We shouldnt need much, think the majority of our luggage is going to be anti bite creams and sun lotion

Oh just thought of something else, do you know whether you can take rechargeable or normal batteries in hand luggage? Going to be taking a camera in the hand luggage, so need to keep the batteries and charger with me, incase the main luggage goes missing.
Sorry for the mammoth of questions, and thanks for all your info, its really helping me to sort things out
Many thanks

For the best advise on what you can take look at
http://www.baa.com. The specific dos and donts are at
http://www.baa.com/assets/B2CPortal/Sta ... tDec06.pdf
The clear plastic bag must be able to be closed, and liquids do include gels, pastes etc. Nothing over 100ml is allowed in carry-on luggage through security. The only exception to this 100ml rule is baby food, which must be tasted at security.
The other thing to remember is that you are now only allowed 1 item of hand luggage each through security, regardless of what it is. Once you are airside you will be able to purchase any duty free item and carry it onboard.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. Yeah the plastic bags shouldnt be a problem. Think the agency we booked with will be giving them to us shortly, so thats good.

Does this apply to the little luggage trollies also?
Thats interesting about the duty free items. I was reading on the Virgin site about buying water once your through security, and there seems to be all these rules about when you can open the bottle etc, unless ive read that wrong....it just seems very confusing! And if you have an open bottle of water, will it be ok to take it through the airport at Tobago? Thinking about it, do you actually get free meals and drinks on long haul flights with Virgin?
Thats interesting about the battery packs, i wasnt sure about that so will have to do some researching on that one!
Many thanks to you all

Plastic freezer bags will be fine to use. The carry on luggage is restricted to 1 piece each. This can be any size up to 56 x 25 x 45cm with or without wheels. Virgin has a weight limit of 6kg on hand luggage.
Once clear of security all the liquid items for sale will have gone through a security check, so deemed safe.
Yes, drinks are free on Virgin
Taking an open water bottle through Tobago shouldn't be a problem, but different (non EU) countries have different rules at airports. I came out of Cuba on Sunday, and found that you cannot export more than 23 (yes 23) cigars without a receipt from the point of purchase

. As luck would have it I had kept mine.

Ray, I was there almost a year ago. I dance salsa and absolutely love it! Did you do any dancing or did you just go for the experience?
