Cash/Credit or Travellers Cheques

Hi, I wonder if you can help. I'm flying to Tobago on Saturday (can't wait!!, i'm sooooo excited now)
and i'm staying with a friend and I'm really not sure in what form I should take my money. As I'm staying with a friend there will be no SAFE that I can make use of to store my valuables so I don't want to have too much cash with me but at the same time I don't want to find I haven't got a facility to withdraw my money
So my question is really what in your opinion is the best way for me to take my money. I don't know whether to take enough TT dollars to get me through a couple of days and then just use my debit card (Maestro) - are there plenty of cash machines available or will I have to travel a distance to find one? Also if I use my maestro card will I be charged everytime you draw money out???
Or am I best taking travellers cheques - again, as I'm not staying in a hotel is it to cash these, are there plenty of places I can do this and are there only certain times/days where the facility to cash them will be available??
Any advice woudl be greatly appreciated.
