Hi,
Are there any months which are worse for mosquitoes? Last year we were in Castara and got bitten by mosquitoes so much. This year we are going at a different time of year and I am hoping there may be less of them around? Can anyone report on the mosquito situation in Castara and if it makes any difference what time of year it is?
Thanks!
Amber

Amber ,I doubt it was mosquitoes.more probably sand flies/noseeums.They are the active on the beach early am and at/after sunset. The little b******s seem to love white/pink meat.Use Off or citronella mixed with your sunscreen or an oil such as coconut or another natural oil.
The breeze at Castara tends to keep mossies down.

(oh and White Oak taking internally helps lessen the irritation  )

Amber,
Rum is David's cure- all for insect bites, lumbago, sunstroke, headaches, hangovers, toothache, dyspepsia and the credit crunch.
I agree that it's not the mossies but the no see ums as David said. I found Englishmans Bay to be the worst place for them. You go in the sea, the repellant washes off, you then return to the beach and the little so and sos attack with military precision. All you can do is try and numb the itch with something like anthisan so you don't scratch in your sleep, and try taking anti-hystamines in advance of your trip.
As for the mossies, I used insect repellant- impregnated bands, and had no problems with flying beasties at all. You can wear them on wrists and ankles if you don't mind looking like you've been tagged!

Last year David recommended citronella to us and (although it took Max a few days to get us a bottle) this was the only stuff that worked. We mixed it with sunscreen for daytime use (noseeums)and baby oil for evenings (mossies)and suffered only a few bites, mainly whilst liming after dark at Mr Wallaces.

We all seem to be agreed about the mosquito then! The breeze does keep them away and on a still night up at the house we put a fan on just to keep the air moving. The bats fly through as we seem to have built along what was a bat highway so really we do not suffer. In the evening I do as villagers do and wear long trousers and socks. You know if it is the sand fly as all the bites tend to be below the knee. Resist the temptation to lie on the beach at night above the high water mark as that is where they seem to congregate awaiting their dinner. Very romantic but there will be a price to pay. The bites are very satisfying to scratch though! Citronella works but I am not sure if I want to wear it all the time.
My other secret is to always travel with my wife Yvonne as they prefer her to me everytime, she is not amused by this though.

Chris,if you mix citronella about three drops to 10cc of almond oil it does not smell.Warning do not apply citronella oil neat to the skin......it WILL burn.
David,hot and sweaty going to jump into the shower as soon as I've cooled down then a few zzzz'sthen off to some more bacchanal at Good timers. :D 8) %*} %*} %*} %*} %*} %*}

Hi all,
I tried citronella oil (mixed with babyoil) and it doesn't work with me. But I found some funny patches on the Internet (can't remember who told me but it was in another thread about Mossies) at Don't-bite-me-patch (.com or so). This patches ar waterproofed, transparent and last about three days on your skin. They keep any biting insects from my skin last year and I bought them again (even with horrible delivery costs from US).

I wll let you know after my holidays.
Cheers
Gisela

Hi Gisella,

With all the people you know in Tobago, wouldn't it have been cheaper to get them delivered here and have them waiting for you?!

Just a thought!!

Lisa.
