Even though things did not work out as planned with my stay at the Naturalist, I wanted to post this report, particularly since there is a negative report about Ancle on the site.
When my family of four arrived at the Naturalist, there was major confusion. Ancle was surprised to see I had two kids with me, because the room we had reserved was not big enough. In addition, it did not have a sea view as I had requested. This had all the makings of a very tense and unhappy situation, not helped by the fact that Ancle had to rush off to the airport almost immediately -- we arrived rather late in the day.
Now, I am not the sort of person to usually do this, but for some reason I had printed out all the email correspondence I'd had regarding this and other bookings I'd made for this trip. In the emails it is clear that I have 2 kids and I wanted a sea view room.
Here's how Ancle handled the situation: He gave us a second room for our children and did not charge us for either room for the one night we stayed -- even though he doesn't normally accept one night stays. Furthermore, he was extremely gracious to us throughout our stay in Castara not only when we ate at his cafe but simply when we ran into him as we went about our days.
Ancle told me that he didn't charge us because it was his mistake and he had to honor his word. I don't think anyone could ask for more than that.
I hope a large, sea view room will be available at the Naturalist the next time we visit, but if not, I will still look forward to seeing Ancle in Castara!
