in defence of violent tobago

A couple of years ago i asked for and recieved loads of info and advice from this forum regarding a once in a lifetime villa holiday on tobago; As a recently widowed dad at the time and with four young kids in tow i found the advice given to me very helpful, amusing and encouraging.
Unfortunately the holiday turned out to be not the best we've had due to several factors including being unlucky with the weather too soon from mums sad death etc etc; although it was memorable.

I am posting now because we are intending to revisit to see what we missed last time and having read recent posts re security I thought I'd share my limited experience. (absolutely gutted that argyle falls were closed due to weather )

Very briefly regarding security I did not feel threatened at all during our stay and had some great times in 'colours restaurant' and others although there was one spaced out bloke in pizza boys who tried to intimidate me into buying his wares, although he was about 7 ft tall i told him where to get off and he did. No problem but a slightly bad taste.
we had a hire car for a few days (won via this site) and whilst exploring the island one day the car kept breaking down. We were somewhere near charlotte up in the hills and stood puzzled with the bonnet open wondering what to do (no contact details were given by the hire company, oops) a pickup stopped and asked if he could help, he had his wife and 2 kids with him and as it turned out he was delivering sheep (i think ) from trinidad; Anyway, what a bloke, not only did he get the car going for me he insisted on escorting us all the way back to our villa in case we broke down again and refused to take anything for his trouble. And to my daughters delight he was a dead ringer for peter andre' So i think its important to know that not all 'trini's' are bad.

Hi Steve,

thank you for sharing your experiences with us. It looks like there will be more unspoiled Holiday experiences coming up on the forum. When I read this it makes me feel go back as soon as possible just to let my friends over there know that most of the visitors love Tobago and come back once in a while.
I travel to Tobago for about twelve years now. Once or twice a year if I can make it (unfortunately not this year) and i never had really bad experiences.
In Germany there is a saying that goes: how you call into the forrest it will come back to you.
Sure there always will be some people harassing others but the very majority is friendly and just happy about tourists who like the island. And sure there are some very nice Trinis. :D
Best whishes
