myTobago Review

Petit Careme , Mount Irvine, Tobago

The following review was produced during a 7-night stay at Petit Careme in March 2017.

Petit Careme is a superb 3-bedroom holiday rental villa with attached one-bedroom self-catering apartment. The property borders the Mount Irvine Golf Course on Tobago's magnificent Caribbean coast. It has won the local tourism authority's "Villa Of The Year" award several times.

We first stayed at Petit Careme in 2005, then again three years later. We returned to review another property on the development a few years later. Petit Careme changed hands in early 2016, so we thought it time to return and see what had changed.

The Villas On The Green development is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Irvine and boasts frontage with the attractive golf course of the same name. The two-acre development comprises five luxury villas built around a shared swimming pool. Petit Careme has the most discrete and pleasant location of the group, being positioned slightly away from the others, at the bottom of a deep gully and next to two wonderful 100-year old Samaan trees. Brief glimpses of the Caribbean Sea can be seen across the golf course.

Mount Irvine is a wonderful location. It is a short 15-20-minute drive from the airport and all the essential shops, restaurants and facilities of Crown Point and the island's capital, Scarborough. It is often said that Tobago comprises of the Lowlands and the 'Nicelands'. Mount Irvine marks the start of the latter.

Whilst Grange Beach is a pleasant 10-minute walk across the golf course and Mount Irvine Bay beach little more than five minutes more, there are no shops or restaurants within walking distance of Petit Careme. Relying on taxis is possible, but will be hugely expensive and inconvenient. Having a self-drive rental vehicle is by far the best way to get the best out of your time on Tobago.

Built in 1997, the five Villas On The Green properties are virtually identical and of modern, semi-Colonial design. The rendered walls of the two-storey houses are finished in a pleasant ivory colour and finished with distinctive red pantile roofs.

The grounds are a riot of colour. The villas are well-spaced and largely screened from each other by stunning bougainvillea and other lush colourful tropical trees and bushes.

Built against a steep hillside, Petit Careme is somewhat taller than the other villas, which made it possible to include a spacious self-contained one-bedroom apartment on the lower-ground floor. The apartment can be rented independently, or together with the main house. When combined, the two units offer a maximum occupancy of 13 people.

The villa has several small steps and no direct wheelchair access. The apartment is at ground floor level and might be appropriate for wheelchair users or those with restricted mobility.

The Petit Careme villa is fully air-conditioned and offers spacious (290m2/3100ft2) luxury accommodation for families or groups seeking the highest standards of self-catering holiday accommodation. All three bedrooms are fully en-suite and all rooms are fully air-conditioned. It is beautifully furnished and decorated throughout, with walls painted in pleasant pastel colours, cool non-slip tiles on all floors and vibrant soft furnishings throughout.

Bedroom 1

The master bedroom is located on what is effectively the ground floor of the villa. At 34m2 it is massive by British standards. All the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished, but the master suite was recently completed refurbished by the new owners, Wendy and Erik, and is now clearly the pièce de résistance.

This bedroom is furnished with a wonderfully comfortable king-size bed, nightstands with reading lamps, a large dressing table with half-length mirror, a pair of suitcase racks and 1.25m of full-length wardrobe space with clothes hangers, plus an armchair. There is also a single divan bed; ideal for a child. A cot is available, when needed.

The room has a wall-mounted 40-inch flat-screen television with fibre-broadband digital television service. Although there is no landline telephone in the villa, fibre broadband is available throughout the house.

The master bathroom features a modern table top wash basin, with shaver socket on the adjacent wall. An electric hairdryer is provided and can be shared with the other rooms. The attractive fully-tiled walk-in shower had recently been fitted with a 6-jet shower panel. Water pressure was reasonable and there always appeared to be adequate supplies of hot water.

Towels and linen are of excellent quality, with linen changes every three days, or as required. Beach towels are also provided.

Bedroom 2

The other two bedrooms are located on the upper floor. Despite being furnished with two 4´6˝ double beds, the second bedroom still appears spacious. Furnishings include bedside tables with lamps, a suitcase rack, a wooden towel/clothes rack and 1.7m of full-length wardrobe hanging space and shelving. This bedroom overlooks the central swimming pool. Glazed doors lead onto a narrow pseudo-balcony at the front of the building.

At 2.5x1.5m, the en-suite bathroom is of reasonable size, but well fitted, practical and attractive. The washbasin is set into an attractive vanity unit with drawers and an under-sink cupboard providing ample storage for toiletries. There is a 110v electric shaver socket and a fully-tiled walk-in shower unit.

Bedroom 3

Although the smallest of the three, bedroom three does not appear cramped despite having a queen-size bed, two nightstands with reading lamps, luggage racks at the foot of the bed and a towel/clothes rack. It is an attractive, light and airy room with glazed doors leading onto the small balcony and windows on the side wall.

The door to the en-suite bathroom is contained behind a false wardrobe door. Like the other rooms, the bathroom is attractively tiled and all fittings were in good condition, with little of the disfiguring corrosion so common in the tropics. The washbasin vanity unit has four drawers plus an under-sink cupboard. There is a shaver socket beside the washbasin and walk-in shower.

Living, Dining Room & Kitchen

The open-plan living, dining and kitchen area of Petit Careme Villa offers a very spacious 50m2 of floor space. The lounge seating consists of a sofa and two armchairs grouped around a coffee table, facing a 40-inch flat screen television with digital service and DVD player. The adjacent dining area features a large glass-topped dining table with eight chairs. The kitchen area is separated from the rest of the room by a large breakfast bar with a pair of wooden stools.

The kitchen is equipped with everything that a cook could want, rather than the somewhat standard sets of cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and utensils that one often finds in most rental properties. It has an excellent range of equipment including an electric oven/grill (broiler), dishwasher and large fridge/freezer, electric kettle, toaster, blender, coffee filter machine and microwave oven. There are lots of cupboards; most stocked with kitchen equipment. In fact everything necessary for comfortable self-catering for parties of up to ten people. Everything was in excellent condition and clean.

A washer and dryer are tucked away in a small utility area behind the kitchen and can be used by guests who rent the villa for five nights or more.

A small starter pack of basic ingredients is provided: salt and pepper, sugar, seasoning and a pack of ground coffee.

In the best traditions of good tropical design, Petit Careme's large 50m2 veranda is sure to become the centre of life for guests. It offers shade throughout the day and wonderful views over the lush colourful gardens, swimming pool and golf course.

The veranda is furnished with seven Adirondack-style cushioned wooden chairs, positioned around a central glass table featuring a charming display of seashells. The hammock is an incredibly relaxing place to chill out. The veranda is equipped with a large glass-topped dining table with six chairs and a large gas barbeque. You couldn't ask for a nicer venue to dine, day or evening.

The birds that constantly visit the feeder hanging above the veranda provided us with constant entertainment. Our favourite visitors were the friendly and colourful Trinidad Motmots who would visit several times a day to feast on the cheese we left out for them.

The villa also features a smaller open terrace on the upper floor. With a pergola partly shaded by amazingly vibrant white and purple bougainvillea, the terrace is a sun trap and provides a really private place to sunbathe.

Adjacent to the veranda, but half a dozen steps lower, is a small plunge pool. The surrounding lattice screen is lit with a mesh of LED string lights. It is a truly romantic spot.

The 112m2/1,200ft2 apartment beneath the main villa offers comfortable self-catering holiday accommodation. It can be rented individually or as an extension to the main house. There is no direct access between the two and both units retain total privacy.

The apartment is spacious by any standards. It is furnished and decorated to the same high standards as the villa. The pale-yellow walls present a bright appearance and show off the wooden kitchen cabinets and furniture to best effect. Colourful wall hangings brighten the overall appearance. The general look and feel is tasteful and elegant.

Although not specifically equipped for the disabled or physically challenged, the apartment has good access throughout. There is a six-inch rise from the bedroom to the bathroom, but wheelchair ramps are available to enable access.

The front of the apartment has a nice covered terrace furnished with padded all-weather chairs, a coffee table and a glass-topped dining table and four chairs, plus a small gas barbeque unit.

The kitchen is equipped with all the usual culprits: a large fridge-freezer, an electric oven with grill/broiler, microwave, coffee maker, liquidiser/blender, toaster, kettle and a dishwasher. As in the villa, the cupboards are well stocked and boast a wide array of kitchen utensils, pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and glassware, etc. This may be a one-bedroom apartment for two adults, but it is man enough to cater for a much larger family. A clothes washer and dryer are discreetly tucked away in a adjacent cupboard.

Should you prefer to dine inside the apartment, rather than out on the lovely terrace, a wooden dining table and four chairs dominate the centre of the living area. Nearby, a divan bed offers accommodation for younger members of the party. A cot is available for infants on request.

The cosy seating area comprises a three-seat couch and armchair, grouped around a small coffee table and facing a 40-inch fibre-based digital television.

The bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed, plus a single bed for children. Individual nightstands with reading lamps, luggage racks and wooden towel rail complete the furnishings.

In the bathroom, a wide vanity unit provides lots of storage space and supplements the two-metre walk-in closet in the bedroom. Needless to say, the apartment is fully plumbed for both hot and cold water. The fully-tiled walk-in shower was in excellent condition and free from the corrosion problems so typical of most properties in the tropics.

There is no question of doubt that the Petit Careme Apartment offers the very highest standards of accommodation and would make a wonderful holiday base for a couple with up to two children.

Pool & Grounds

The centre of the development is dominated by an attractive 18m swimming pool, with depths ranging from 1.2 to 2.3m. The overflow from a small raised toddler's pool makes a nice water feature. The pool terrace is of adequate width and furnished with five plastic recliners.

Adjacent to the pool is a small building that acts as an 'entertainment area' and which would appear to have been designed as a bar.

Given the fact that the Villas On The Greenrepresent a highly desirable accommodation option, we were quite surprised to find that only about half were occupied during our stay. The season was getting on and everyone had returned home after the Easter break. From our point of view it was ideal, because we love our peace and quiet. However, even on our previous trip, when all five villas had been occupied, the development never appeared busy and this was particularly noticeable around the pool.

Staff & Security

Petit Careme Villa is managed by a lovely housekeeper, Charmaine, who services the apartment every day except Sundays. Virtually every report in the villa's guest book sings her praises and I'm not surprised. She is a terrific cook and you can make private arrangements with her to cook meals for your party, do laundry or babysit.

Villas On The Green is managed centrally as far as ground and pool maintenance is concerned. The staff were friendly and unobtrusive. We have stayed on the development on four occasions over the past fifteen years and can confidently say that we have never seen the development looking better than it does now.

Electronically-operated gates protect the main entrance to the development. The gates can be operated from the villas, or by remote control from approaching vehicles. A security guard is on duty from 6pm to 6am seven nights a week. The villas are fitted with security bars on all windows and doors. There is also a key-operated security safe for valuables.

I hate to be less than original, but after another thoroughly enjoyable stay at Petit Careme I can only repeat the conclusion we wrote following our 2005 stay – the year that it won the "Villa Of The Year" award from the local government's tourism department for the second year running:

"Our five days at Petit Careme Villa passed all too quickly. This is undoubtedly a villa that I could move into, permanently, tomorrow. The location is superb and you couldn't be more centrally placed for every shop, restaurant and other facility on the island. The villa itself is tremendously comfortable, from a living point of view. This villa would not feel crowded even with a full complement of eight people in residence."

Petit Careme, a weekend retreat for mind, body and spirit...This expansive, spotlessly clean and beautifully appointed apartment provided the space and peaceful ambience to make rediscovering and recharging myself possible. The privacy of the villa's lush garden took my breath away and the patio was the perfect escape for my morning coffee! Wendy is an amazing, knowledgeable host; her recommendations of activities were always spot-on and I could feel my energy regain its vibrancy with each outing. I must extend my admiration to Charmaine for the precise way the bed was done and those neat corners! (I love perfectly-made beds) Wayne’s gentlemanly and respectful demeanor was always appreciated. In short; service par excellence! Wendy and her team are awesome and my next visit to this Tobago gem is guaranteed. Visit for yourself and experience the magic! Xoxo

Diane h from Canada visited in January 2019 and awarded

Petit Careme Villa was the perfect place for my friends and I to stay during our Tobago holiday... spacious, perfectly appointed, surrounded by lush, well-maintained grounds. We especially loved the main floor deck for morning coffee or a swing in the hammock with a good book. As a bonus, each bedroom has its own en-suite! The villa's dipping pool and the property's communal pool are lovely places to unwind.

Thank you Wendy for all your time and information! Without your input, we wouldn't have explored Speyside, Argyle Waterfall, Pigeon Point, Little Tobago, and all the interesting bays and roads along the way! Thank you for introducing us to Jean Claude at Tobago Chocolate Delights and Giselle at Shore Things Cafe. Thanks to Charmaine for taking care of the villa, providing some meals for us, and our visit to the fish market. Thanks also to Wayne for driving us around and for always being on time.

Special mention for some amazing meals out.... the Seahorse Inn, Restaurant, and Bar, as well as Jemma's Treehouse and Blue Waters Inn in Speyside; the Sugar Mill Restaurant at the Mt. Irvine Bay Resort for a lovely outdoor lunch. We also rented chairs and umbrella's at the resorts beach and had a relaxing afternoon by the ocean.

This was a truly memorable holiday. Tobago has so much to offer and there just wasn't enough time to see and do everything. I will definitely be returning to the island and Petit Careme Villa in the future!
