Castara Retreats Apartments - Reader Reports & Opinion

A lot's been written here and in the forum about the superb apartments at Castara Retreats. After three weeks in Coasthanger we can only echo and add to the praise. The apartment is beautifully conceived to make the most of its splendid position overlooking Castara Bay in two directions. The rainforest timber construction is both sympathetic to its setting and warmly welcoming. It was a lovely place to stay and we were genuinely sad to leave.

Everyone involved in looking after the guests is friendly and helpful. There's always someone at hand if you need some help or advice, or even just an idle chat. You really could not wish for better company on your holiday.

We are impressed by the commitment of owners Steve and Sue to running Castara Retreats sustainably. We had the unexpected pleasure of meeting them during our stay (and it was a pleasure)and took the opportunity to discuss some green issues with Steve. We think he's doing an excellent job and we recommend you read about his efforts on the Castara Retreats website.

We wholeheartedly recommend Castara Retreats - it offers an exceptional way to experience Tobago.

We arrived in Tobago on the 28th December to warm weather and an even warmer welcome. Jeanell whisked us from there to Castara, with the obligatory stop at Pennysavers to stock up on the essentials. (beer, rum and a few bits to eat...!) The drive through the lush countryside gave us a glimpse of what was waiting for us.

Castara retreats is positioned on a hill overlookig the wonderful beach and village. The accommodation is as described on their website, comfortable, with more than enough of the bits and pieces you may need if you want to cook for yourself. Although after tasting marieta wonderful cooking on the evening of our arrival we soon opted to try out the various eateries we had read about on the mytobago forum!!!

We stayed in osprey, which was to provide a perfect haven for our week in this paradise. From listening to the early morning birdsong and watching the wonderful sunrises from the comfort of our bed through the shutters, to relaxing on the balcony feeding the birds and sipping the odd one or five rums while the sun created another spectacular canvas as it set, we soon fell into the rhythm of this wonderful village. We were lucky enough to meet Steve and Sue who have built this special place. I can understand why they chose this lovely part of Tobago.Castara is an small fishing village. It has a few bars and eateries, but it is still a beautiful unspoilt paradise. After reading everything on the forum and on Castara Retreats website, we were still unprepared for the sheer beauty of the location. This was the first time that I have been happy to sit and just gaze out at a place.

We cannot thank everyone at Castara Retreats enough, you all made our time there a first trip to Tobago that we will never forget.

To Steve and Sue, thank you for creating such a wonderful place to stay that is so thoughtfully in harmony with the fantastic surroundings. Also to Porridge and Jeanell for looking after our every need, and to Duck who apart from being a barbecue king, provided a day to remember with a brilliant boat trip. Five star hotels and resorts could not have given us such an enjoyable holiday.

Castara Retreats is a very special place, you can be sure we will be back!!!

Hugo Meier from Olten visited in April 2006 and awarded  Five out of Five

My Wife and I stayed in Tobago for 3 weeks last April. It was our third visit and we'll come a 4th time for sure!

In search for another true Tobago experience this time we discovered one of the most beautiful locations on the island! The "Costhanger" is one of 6 appartements who belong to "Castara Retreats". It's located in Castara a unspoilt fishing village. It's the perfect place to stay if you're looking for a relaxing, less "touristy" island experience. Looking down over the village, the forest, the bay and the ocean – with nothing between us and the horizon – is something we could never get enough.

The accommodation overlooks the bay and village and it's just a 3 minutes walk to the closest section of the beach. The appartment was clean, spacious and had all the utilities and utensils we needed for comfortable holidays (espesially a big refridgerator!). Together with other guets we had celebrate some barbecque partys and went to the famous "Sunday School". Because of Porridge, the other guests and all other staff who were extremly friendly, this vacation will always remain in our memory as the best vacation ever.

Our 2 week family holiday in Rainforest was delightful. The apartment held a stunning position overlooking Castara and was just a short walk to the beach. The 2 bedrooms and large open living space made for a very comfortable stay.

The welcome and care we received from Porridge, Duck and the team was outstanding. We fell in love with Castara, its people and its way of life and we will have many, many happy memories especially Duck's fantastic barbeques, boat trips and rum punches! Also partying until the early hours at 'Sunday School' with Porridge and other guests.

Thank you Sue and Steve for the wonderful experience of Castara Retreats. Thank you Porridge, Duck and Jeanell - you made our holiday so very special.
