Castara restaurant reviews

Post by Sue J »

Here are our thoughts on the places that we ate during our stay in Castara. The one thing that we would say about ALL of them is that the service was excellent - always friendly and prompt. Perhaps it comes of being in a village rather than somewhere less personal in a resort area.

Clay Kitchen. Food here was very good. Rebecca offers freshwater crayfish that are absolutely delicious, but the goat, chicken and shrimp were also very good. The only problem we had was in finding them open - on a couple of occasions they told us they would definitely be open the next evening but weren't when we got there.

D Almond Tree (also known as Vera's). Great local food and a very warm welcome from Vera. Vera serves roti at lunchtime, but not dinner. Bring your own drinks if you want alcohol, or try Vera's fresh juices, which are really good.

Marguarite's. More great local food. And great fish and chips one night, too, when Sherwin was cooking. The fish was called Pargi (not sure of spellling) and was the best we had anywhere. Another place to take your own drinks if you want alcohol.

At home. Have to put in a word about this, not only 'cos other half is a great cook, but also because you will miss out unless you go down to the co-op and buy fish from the fishermen to cook yourself. It is sold as soon as it comes off the boats, usually mid to late afternoon, and what is available varies from day to day. Make sure you stake your claim to the fish you want quickly or you will find that it has all been sold. They gut and scale it for you, and even fillet it if required. Whilst all around a high volume, apparently aggressive, conversation continues as if they were all about to break into a fight.........they're not, that's just the way of holding a normal discussion!
