A guide to hiring a tour guide or operator on Tobago
In theory, Tobago tour operators and tour guides should be certified under the Trinidad & Tobago Tourism Industry Certification (TTTIC) accreditation scheme. Whilst we totally endorse any qualification that guarantees standards and protects the interests of visitor, we regret that the TTTIC scheme is seriously flawed. The ONLY guides we have issued public warnings about have been TTTIC-certified.
This sad fact should not reflect on the many other excellent reputable guides who have attained TTTIC accreditation. In our experience, the only real value to the qualification is that it indicates that the tour guide/operator has valid public liability insurance.
I appreciate that insurance is the last thing that visitors think of before taking a tour or excursion. You may even wonder what relevance insurance has to something like a rainforest tour. Well, most tours on Tobago comprise of small parties of two to eight passengers. In the majority of cases, the tour guide is also the driver. Don’t ignore the fact that the roads are narrow and driving standards poor. The driver’s concentration will be split between driving, talking to passengers and looking for features to point out. The question of insurance is even more important for water-based tours where consideration should also include whether the captain of the boat is licensed and how many people the boat is licensed to carry.
