A Suitable Hotel For 2 Fifty Something Couples? 07 Aug 2006

We are two couples in our late fifties who have booked a flight to Tobago in January 07 and we are now looking for a suitable hotel. We are interested in, but not expert at, birdwatching and we want a small hotel with a pool and decent food which is not too far from a good beach. We would then use this as a base so that we can get out and about and explore.

We are interested in booking The Hummingbird Hotel at Crown Point. We understand it has been recently sold to new owners who we have been in contact with. Unfortunately as they are unable to take a deposit from us via our credit card they are asking for half the cost of the holiday, upfront, transferred into their bank account.

Has anyone any knowledge of the Crown Point area and The Hummingbird in particular? Is it a suitable place for us?

And has anyone an opinion on paying such a large proportion of the holiday so far in advance and without the benefit of credit card protection?

Also has anyone any other suggestions as to where to stay, preferable near to bird watching areas?

We have just returned from staying at the Hummingbird (14 to 21 October 2004). This hotel certainly live up to their motto 'Arrive as strangers, leave as friends'.

My wife and I booked our stay at the Hummingbird on the strength of this motto, the reviews on we had read and the impression made from the moment we started dealing with them.

I can categorically say we were not disappointed. They are a friendly and helpful family. It may seem trite, but it is certainly true. They are not 'in your face' if you want to join in, you can, if you want time on your own, you've got it. The food and service are very good - don't go here if you worry about putting on an extra pound or two. Shane's roast beef and Yorkshire puddings are excellent and, rightfully, gaining a huge reputation AND to top it all, the price of the beer is the cheapest on the island.

If you want to go somewhere - it can be arranged for you. If you want to go to one of the near by beaches, just ask for a lift and as soon as they can they take you there and arrange a time to pick you up if you want. Well, I could go on but the rest, I suggest, you find out for yourself. Glyn and Jo Jones, UK.

The Hummingbird Hotel was the best accommodation I have experienced in quite a long time. The warm family who runs this intimate, beautiful hotel (three generations under one roof), took personal responsibility for my friend and I having a fabulous and adventurous vacation. They not only arranged successful tours for us on Tobago, but even hooked us up with a driver and tour guide in Trididad.

I appreciated the interest that they took in my life and the fact that they seemed to truly enjoy running their estabishment. Everytime we returned from dinner or from an adventure, they were there to greet us and chat with us about our experiences. They went above and beyond their roles as hosts and I consider it a great stoke of luck to have found the Hummingbird.

Our vacation would not have been what it was if we hadn't stayed there at the beginning of our trip and I very highly recommend this lovely hotel to anyone travelling in Tobago. It is a relatively new place and it deserves all the guests it can get.
