Magdalena Grand Beach Resort - Review Page 2

Accommodation

The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort offers178 Deluxe rooms and 22 one and two-bedroom Jacuzzi Suites. All rooms are of similar size, style, décor and furnishings. Local laws forbid smoking inside enclosed public areas, so smokers must restrict their pleasure to external locations, as at all other hotels on the island.

Deluxe Rooms

Our Deluxe Room at Magdalena Grand Beach ResortOur Deluxe room offered a fairly standard, but adequately spacious, 32m2 (350ft2). internal floor space, not counting the 8m2 (85ft2) balcony. Layout was standard international: a short entrance corridor with wardrobe on one side and bathroom on the other, leading into a main bedroom area with balcony/patio leading off. The soft yellow and green décor was pleasing to the eye but there was no real sense of being in the Caribbean. It was a very comfortable room, but could have been in any decent chain hotel, anywhere in the world.

Rooms are available with either a king-size bed, or with two double beds. Our bed was superbly comfortable. Room furnishing included a comfortable wickerwork armchair with footstool, 31-inch flat screen TV with 22 satellite channels (including BBC World) and a small table and two chairs.

The 1.5 metre wardrobe was adequate for purpose, and split 30/70 between shelf space and full-length hanging. The wardrobe also housed an ironing board and iron, and a digital safe large enough for documents, jewellery and other smallish valuables. It was a shame that there was nowhere to store suitcases once emptied.

Our Standard Room at Magdalena Grand Beach ResortAdjacent to the wardrobe, a neat utility area was equipped with a coffee filter machine and small stock of tea and coffee supplies. Trying to make decent tea with a coffee machine was an interesting exercise, but at least it was wet. Below the worktop, a small refrigerator/ minibar enabled us to keep bottles of water nicely chilled. Housekeeping provided two small bottles of water each day and we were informed that the minibar could be stocked as required.

At just 2.2x2.6 metres, the bathroom was hardly overly-generous. It was, however, beautifully furnished. Inset into a lovely granite-effect vanity unit, the washbasin had a large mirror with good lighting and there was lots of storage for toiletries – both our own and the complimentary range provided by the hotel.

Bathroom furnishing included a bath tub, separate shower cubicle, hair dryer, shaver socket, tissue dispenser, washing line and two soft towelling bath robes with slippers. As regular readers will know, I am particularly fastidious about showers. Our shower at the Magdalena was about as good as it gets. It may not have had a 10-inch raindrop head, but the cascade was controllable, all-encompassing, gentle on tender skin, and had good water pressure.

Magdalena Grand Beach ResortEvery room has a small private patio or balcony furnished with a pair of high-quality fabric-covered chairs and an attractive circular table. All rooms face the sea, but the trees and foliage along the shorefront do limit the beach views.

As might be expected, the rooms are fully air-conditioned. As with most hotels, a centralised ducted system is utilised. It worked adequately and was not too intrusive.  Spending extended periods in the room writing this review, I found it far more relaxing to switch the air-con off, open the balcony doors, and listen to the surf breaking on the beach.

Each room had an I.P. telephone system and internet access, either via wireless or standard RJ45 ethernet cable. I congratulate the Magdalena Grand on offering complimentary Internet access. Too many hotels see this increasingly necessary feature as just another way to part the shekels from their guest, like exorbitant telephone charges.

We were delighted with our room. Everything was in excellent maintenance and decorative order. Rooms are serviced daily and the housekeepers proved friendly and efficient.

Jacuzzi Suites

Magdalena Grand SuiteThe Magdalena Grand Beach Resort also has 22 one and two-bedroom suites. The suites consist of two standard Deluxe rooms with an interconnecting door. The bedroom half is furnished as a standard bedroom, as described above. The other half is furnished as a sitting room with sofas and chairs, plus a desk and chair. These ‘parlours’ also have a bathroom equipped as a powder room with shower, plus a Jacuzzi on the patio. The two-bedroom suites are basically the same, but with a bedroom on each side of the central sitting room.
