Magdalena Grand Beach Resort - Review Page 5
The Club Cee Cee, club and play area for children opened a few weeks after our visit. Most Tobagonians absolutely adore children and it is wonderful to see the way they take to children of every age. Left in their charge, your kiddies are sure to be happy little bunnies.
Babysitting services can be arranged through the Housekeeping supervisor. Complimentary cribs/cots are available for the rooms.
There is a small gift shop inside the main entrance foyer. It sells a useful range of postcards and beach essentials. There is also a small boutique just outside the hotel entrance offering local swimwear, beach wraps, garments, sandals, etc.
There are no other facilities within walking distance. Scarborough is a 15-minute drive away. However, the Gulf City Mall is less than 1.5 miles away and offers the best choice for shopping. Scarborough is an ugly town of no merit and, given the traffic problems and lack of parking, is hardly worth visiting.
The 4,670ft2 Calibri Ballroom can seat up to 500 people. Alternatively, it can be divided into four separate rooms catering for 125 people in each. In addition, there is also the smaller Jacobin and Osprey Meeting Rooms. These seat 80 persons or can be divided into smaller rooms for 40 people. Audio-visual equipment is available for business meetings and seminars.
The hotel is an excellent venue for weddings. There are a number of excellent venues both inside the hotel and in the grounds, although beach weddings will perhaps not be an option due to the high winds.
As part of our review process we make a point of seeking the opinions of other guests. Knowing Tobago as well as we do, little takes us by surprise and it is easy for us to take things for granted. We therefore make every effort to consider the property from the perspective of the first-time visitors, particularly as they are the most important readers of our reviews.
The general consensus amongst the many guests that we spoke to was very favourable. It must be remembered that our visit occurred less than a month after the hotel doors opened and before the hotel’s official opening. It was inevitable that there would be some hiccups.
It was also very clear that guests recognised and appreciated the effort that had clearly gone into staff training. Every guest, without fail, commented on how wonderfully friendly the staff were. Knowing how difficult it is to get good local staff, I must admit that I was highly impressed.
The only real criticism we heard was from guests who expected to walk out of their room and onto golden sand and gentle turquoise Caribbean waters. No, you can’t do that, but such beaches are only a short drive away. Guests must also accept that hairstyles are going to be more country than town. However, against that, when humidity rises and the winds drop, you might be commenting on how lovely the weather is whilst those on the Caribbean side are retreating to air-conditioned rooms.
All in all, the Magdalena Grand Beach Resort has got off to a cracking good start and, if standards can be maintained, will hopefully be a great success. The hotel is a welcome addition to Tobago tourism industry and we wish them well. We certainly look forward to our return.
